Alice Elizabeth Rogers, age 87, went home to be with her Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ on Friday, March 8th, 2024. Alice was born April 26, 1936, in Galena, Missouri to Earl and Martha Elizabeth Hicks. She attended school in Galena and was always very social, making many lifelong friends.
Alice also met the love of her life, Elvin Rogers in Galena after their families became neighbors in the early 1950s. She and Elvin were married in 1953, the same year they would first visit Yakima, WA. In 1954 they returned to Missouri and welcomed their first child, Carl. Their stay in Missouri was brief because they decided to return to Yakima in 1955 to settle down and plant their own roots. They would welcome four more children in the following years, Mary, Wayne, Rebecca (Becky), and Betty. Alice truly loved being a mommy, she and Elvin worked hard to provide the best life they could for their children. Their five children grew up and blessed them with 15 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren, and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
In 1992, Alice lost her beloved husband to cancer but her love for him remained and she never remarried. Losing her husband wasn’t the only devastating heartbreak Alice faced, she also lost both sons and her favorite son-in-law to cancer. Though she experienced these unimaginable heartaches, Alice’s faith in Jesus never wavered. She accepted Jesus as her Saviour and had faith that she would see her loved ones again as we believe we will see her again.
Family was everything to Alice and she had many people she considered family in all areas of her life. She loved attending church with her daughters and spending time with her church family at Bible Baptist Church of Selah. She especially loved Pastor Cline and his wife Cookie.
Alice also loved the time she spent with her family, especially with her girls. She loved to sit and visit with them and would call daily just to check in. She loved to talk on the phone and it wasn’t uncommon to get a quick call from her just to see how your day was going. Visits from grandchildren, great and great-great-grandchildren also brought so much joy to her life. Whenever they would visit she would be sure to have a story or picture to share and sometimes even a special treat. She took great pride in remembering every single one of her children's and grandchildren’s birthdays! We will all miss those special phone calls from her.
It wasn’t just her immediate family that received her love, which was one of the reasons she was beloved by all. Her nieces, nephews, cousins, and other extended family were all so special to her. She was loving, kind, and generous and made everyone feel like family. She loved to sew and embroider and would often gift embroidered pillowcases and quilts to her family and friends. All of those who received these special gifts will cherish them forever. Alice was an avid reader and you’d often find her with her nose in a book. When she was in better health, Alice was also a great baker. She made some of the best homemade biscuits and jam, chicken, and dumplings, and her chocolate fudge was delicious!
Alice is survived by her children Mary Leach, Rebecca “Becky” Barnett, and Betty Polina, sisters Ruth “Dink” Williams, and Ruby (Stanley) Putman, brothers Earl “Jay” (Rosie) Hicks, and Donald (Barbara) Hicks, grandchildren Maryann Bunnell, Kenneth (Nicolle) Leach, Stephanie (Kely) Kincaid, John Jackson Jr, Gary Jackson, Lisa Baugher, Geana Rivera, Sylvia (Ricky) Martinez, Sarah (Jesse) Wolfram, Pedro (Olga) Polina Jr, Rachel (Willie) Sosa, Gabe (Danielle) Polina, Carla Hearin, Michael Rogers, Carrie (Bulmaro) Ruiz, as well as 35 great-grandchildren, 10 great-great grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
She was preceded in death by her parents Earl and Elizabeth Hicks, husband Elvin Rogers, sons Carl Rogers, Wayne Rogers, and son-in-law Pedro Polina, sisters Sally, Dolly, and Wanda, brothers Bob, Louie, Frisco, and Sammy, and great-grandchildren Austin Jackson and Sadie Rivera.
Special thanks to her daughter Becky for being with Mommy to care for her over the years.
A viewing for Alice will be held Monday, March 18, 2024 from 3:30 PM to 7:30 PM at Langevin El Paraiso Funeral Home. Family, friends, and others whose lives Alice touched are invited to join us in honoring her life, Tuesday, March 19th at 10am at Yakima Bible Baptist Church.
