Born in Davenport, Iowa, Suzanne possessed a fiery and competitive spirit from the get go, partnered with the gift of hospitality. Whenever Suzanne threw a party, it had to be THE BEST…parents enjoyed her sons’ birthday parties more than the children. She welcomed strangers into her home with the same warmth and zeal as beloved family and friends. People were drawn to her as she lit up every room with her energy and joie de vivre. Mundane occasions were made extra special when Suzanne was involved. One of her famous sayings was “if you’re not going to overdo it, why do it at all?” Even a simple snow day at home with her boys was an occasion to remember. Chateaubriand on a Tuesday was not unheard of. One of her favorite things to do was clamming in Duxbury Bay with dear friends, and then creating delicious food for days! Her stuffed Quahogs were one of her signature dishes.
From the moment she graduated Judson University in 1988, she was hosting get-togethers and creating artwork in the kitchen. Her gifts were shared for many years at SPAGIO of Grandview where she first completed an sous chef apprenticeship under Chef Hubert Seifert and then moved into the role of Marketing Director, adding her touch to so many aspects of the business. In between the initial apprenticeship and eventually settling in Columbus, her expertise was front and center at Eddie’s of Roland Park in Baltimore, Maryland where she further honed her culinary skills. There was a not a single person who ever walked away from Suzanne unwelcome or hungry.
Volunteering was also at the heart of Suzanne’s daily life, whether it was serving as President of the (former) Pleasure Guild of Nationwide Children’s Hospital, preparing meals for those in need through friendship dinners at Worthington Presbyterian Church, and organizing various activities and fundraising events for Worthington schools and athletics. She also worked to prepare gourmet meals for the sick and indigent wherever she lived. The list could go on forever. Her generosity knew no bounds.
Suzanne is preceded in death by her father, James Ashford (2019) and brother, Daniel Ashford (2010). She is survived by her husband, Steven Guy, her sons Henry and Samuel, mother Nancy Ashford, brother Mark Ashford, sister Lisa Sawartzki (Robert), brother-in-law Mike (Colleen) Guy, nieces Sunni and Cassandra Tackett, nephews James Tackett, Jesse and Trevor Ashford, Walker Guy and three grand nephews.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, April 15 from 9:30am - 12 noon at Schoedinger Funeral Home in Worthington. A 2pm memorial service will follow at Worthington Presbyterian Church with reception for family and friends thereafter. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to either Special Olympics at https://www.specialolympics.org/ or to the Alzheimer’s Association at https://www.alz.org/, two organizations near and dear to Suzanne.
