John Paul Cushman, 82, of Delaware, Ohio passed away peacefully at home on December 2, 2023 after a valiant battle with cancer and Parkinson’s disease. He was born in Philadelphia, PA to John A. and Jean C. Cushman, and grew up in Rose Valley, PA; Winchester, VA; and Reedsville, PA. He graduated from Nether Providence High School in Wallingford, PA in 1959 and married Anne Omohundro in 1969.
Before beginning a long career in the chemical manufacturing industry, he received degrees from Temple University and Oklahoma State University. From 1967-1984, John worked for Allied Chemical Corp. in the Philadelphia area. He and his family moved to Atlanta, GA in 1985 where he served as the plant manager of AZS Corp. In 1987, he moved back to Philadelphia to take over as plant manager of Ashland Chemical’s Composite Polymers Division. In 1992 Ashland brought John to Columbus, OH where he spent the next 16 years traveling around the world coordinating manufacturing operations for Ashland’s various divisions, but never without a jar of peanut butter. Chemical plants in Japan, Korea, China, Australia, South America and many countries in Europe were on his regular travel itinerary. He retired from Ashland in 2008 in his final role as Director of Manufacturing.
John is survived by his wife of 54 years, Anne; son John Christopher (Christy); daughter Kate Elizabeth (Kelly), brothers David and Thomas; sister Jean; and granddaughters Annabelle and Samantha Cushman and numerous nieces and nephews.
John loved sports and family vacations including annual trips to Martha’s Vineyard. He was a skilled handyman who enjoyed spending his free time on home improvement projects. He was known for his great sense of humor. He was a great mentor and dedicated to his work.
