James K. Burt, 90, went home to be with the Lord on April 18, 2024. He was born March 5, 1934 in Des Moines, Iowa. Preceded in death by parents, Charles E. and Elsie M. (Campbell) Burt, he leaves a wife of 70 years, Arlene (Fisher) Burt. He will be missed by a large family, which includes his children; Jeri L. Dyer, J. Robert (Cheryl) Burt, Cynthia L. (Kevin) Howard, Laura L. (Greg) Moffitt, David A. (Melissa) Burt; fifteen grandchildren and twenty four great-grandchildren. James graduated from the Des Moines Technical High School in 1951, served in the U.S. Navy from 1952 to 1956, and attended Iowa State University from 1956 to 1962, where he received a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. After a short time in small animal practice, Dr. Burt returned to ISU for graduate work and teaching. He received a Master’s Degree in 1967.
He moved to Ohio that year to teach Veterinary Radiology at The Ohio State University, establishing the first residency program in Veterinary Radiology at OSU in 1970. With a strong interest in Biblical Studies, he started a weekly Bible Study with veterinary students, which became known as The Veterinary Student Fellowship.
Dr. Burt retired from OSU in 1987 and continued a radiographic interpretation service for practicing veterinarians in the Columbus area. Discontinuing that practice in 1992, he continued to be available to conduct myelograms on dogs, cats and exotic animals around central Ohio.
Dr. Burt was active in the American Veterinary Radiology Society and Educators in Veterinary Radiologic Science, both of which were later replaced by the American College of Veterinary Radiology. He served as president of EVRTS and ACVR, and represented ACVR for 15 years on the American Board of Veterinary Specialties. He created the official logos for the ACVR and ABVS. He was an honor roll member of the American Veterinary Medical Association and member of the Ohio VMA. He served as a member of the Ohio Veterinary Medical Licensing Board, and was President of the board in 2005.
Music was his avocation and passion. In addition to singing and playing several instruments, Dr. Burt directed adult and teen choirs in several churches. While on the faculty of ISU, he established and directed a student male chorus in the Veterinary College.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Wednesday, April 24, 2024 at Linworth Baptist Church, 6200 Linworth Road prior to a Funeral Service at 12 p.m. Graveside services with Military Honors will be conducted at Kingwood Memorial Park Mausoleum, 8230 Columbus Pike, Lewis Center.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Dr. Burt may be made to the building fund at Linworth Baptist Church, 6200 Linworth Road, Worthington, Ohio 43085.
