Billie B. Stubbs

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Billie Burke Stubbs, age 86, who departed this world on October 30, 2024, after a sudden brain hemorrhage interrupted her vibrant, active, faith-filled life.

Billie was born in Indianapolis, IN, on August 27, 1938, to Florence (nee Scarpone) and James Burke. After losing her father at an early age, she helped her family by having a paper route throughout grade school and working at a cafeteria during high school and college. She was the salutatorian of her class at St. Mary Academy, and then went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in chemistry at Marian College, followed by a master’s degree at the University of Detroit. It was while in Detroit that she met the love of her life, Robert Stubbs, whom she married on December 29, 1962. They settled in Cleveland, and she devoted the early years of their marriage to raising their three daughters before going to work at NASA as a technical editor after the girls were in college.

A devoted Catholic, Billie exemplified a life of unwavering faith, love, and selfless dedication to her family. She was the quintessential matriarch: tough as nails with a heart of gold. There is nothing she wouldn’t have done for her daughters or grandchildren. She spent countless hours driving all over the country to visit them and help them with anything and everything. She never missed a birthday, First Communion, or graduation, and she always arrived with food. She attended countless soccer, football, hockey, basketball, lacrosse, baseball and softball games, dive meets, music recitals, and school plays. If someone was moving, she was helping, as recently as moving her granddaughter into college this fall. She inspired everyone she met with her spirit, energy and tenacity.

Billie is survived by her daughters, Anne Therese Stubbs, MD (AJ Bush), and Cailin Marie Stubbs, MD (Dave Williams); grandchildren Aidan Minton, Chloe Minton, Jack Brooks (Julianne Berry), Joshua Brooks, Joseph Brooks, Chiara Bilant, Trevor Bilant, Tyler Bush, Tanner Bush, and Sidney Bush; brother, James Burke (Barbara); sisters, Maureen Piontek (late David) and Patricia Burke; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert M. Stubbs; her daughter, Maureen Stubbs, MD; her parents, James and Florence Burke; and her brother, Thomas Burke (Joan).

Calling hours will be on Saturday, November 2, 2024, from 3-6 PM, at Schoedinger Funeral Home, 6699 N High St, Worthington, OH 43085. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, November 4, 2024 at 11:00 AM at Saint John Neumann Catholic Church, 9633 E OH-37, Sunbury, OH 43074.
