Kurt Josef Wederbrook, aged 65, passed away peacefully on April 4, 2025, at Emory University Hospital, Atlanta, Georgia. At his side was his loving wife Frieda, older brother Earl and his wife Shandon, lifelong friend Jim Rudy and several sisters in law.
Kurt was born on February 2, 1960, in Bainbridge, Georgia, the sixth child from the marriage of Earl Alvin Wederbrook and Patricia Ann (O’Brien) Wederbrook. Kurt’s father died in a plane crash in June 1960 and his family moved to South Florida a few years later. His mother married James Joseph Furrey in 1965, and “Jim” quickly filled the role as Kurt’s Dad.
He attended Sunset Elementary School, New River Middle School and graduated from Stranahan High School in 1978. A lifelong athlete, Kurt began playing football in elementary school and was a star player on Stranahan High School’s Football and Baseball Team.
Growing up Kurt earned a reputation for being a “trickster” with a great sense of humor. He would be the one to scare you on Halloween, re-hide the eggs at Easter and sing Christmas songs the loudest.
Kurt attended Broward Community College and graduated with an AA degree in Law Enforcement, the first step in his career as a Police Officer. He began dating Frieda Worthing, his wife to be, in 1987 and they were happily married in Fort Lauderdale, Florida in 1993.
He was sworn in with the Plantation Police Department in 1982 and quickly established a reputation as a friendly, hard-working colleague and loyal partner. Kurt steadily moved up the ranks from Patrolman to Field Training Officer. He was selected to be a member of the first Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team, eventually moving to Street Crimes and ultimately to Vice and Narcotics. Kurt retired in 2009. He played on the Police Softball League for many years where he was known as a spirited competitor constantly encouraging his team mates to victory. An avid Dolphins fan, he also enjoyed College Football and on any given Saturday could be easily heard cheering loudly for the Florida State Seminoles.
Kurt and Frieda enjoyed traveling with his brother Eric and wife Cathy and have many fond memories of bright winter days spent on snow covered slopes or balmy summer nights in the Keys. He was the best of brothers; loved his family completely and with a huge heart of gold was always quick to help a family member in need.
Kurt is survived by his older sisters Sandra Lee Atkinson from Bainbridge, Georgia, and Linda Gay Carson from Morriston, Florida, his older brother Earl Storm Wederbrook (Colonel USMC, Ret) from San Diego, California, his youngest sister Theresa Marie Furrey from Walland, Tennessee, a multitude of nieces and nephews and his beloved dog Dutton.
Family and friends are invited to a Celebration of Kurt’s Life which will be held on May 31 at 5:00pm at CJ Blacks (which was a favorite hangout for Kurt and his many friends), located at 11300 W State Rd 84, Davie, FL.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Kurt’s name to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation at t2t.org.
