Elsie Barbara Ebenal of McLean, SK passed away Friday February 11, 2022, at Golden Prairie Care Home in Indian Head. Elsie was born in Prince Rupert BC on November 29, 1944 to Filip Martin and Catalina Wolz. She was the youngest of 11 children, 10 girls and 1 boy. Elsie grew up in Regina, SK and attended Saint Augustine School and Balfour High School, later working for a number of companies as an accounting clerk. Mom married dad on August 8, 1964 and lived in Regina for a short period before moving to McLean in 1973, where they spent their time together. They had a cabin at Wapaweeka Lake where they enjoyed the beauty and peacefulness that it offered and then they spent winter holidays in Mexico to get away from the cold SK days. They had the pleasure of their kids and dad’s brother and wife visiting them at their Lo De Marcos get away. Mom and dad also enjoyed local visits to Winnipeg, to see family and St. Pete’s colony, to celebrate Grottofest annually.
Mom was a VERY active member of the McLean community; she worked as the Village Administrator for a number of years, was a member of the Recreation Board, was a Brownie Leader, arranged crafts and other children’s activities, was a part of the McLean Women’s club, helped organize the celebration of McLean being a community for 100 years, was a member of the Holy Angels Roman Catholic Women’s Club, and helped organize McLean Sport days. She was a parade marshal, she organized cabarets, she volunteered at the school, she worked at teas and fall suppers – she was always involved in something that brought people together and which brought joy to small town life which she enjoyed immensely.
She was also talented at several crafts, including drawing and painting. Her talents will be remembered by those who purchased her work, as well as by family and friends who proudly have her work displayed in their homes. Mom loved her flowers/garden, you could always find her at Wood Country with her close friend Sandra where she was always buying more flowers. You could also find her cleaning the house, the yard, her children’s houses, vehicles etc – she was a clean FREAK. Elsie was also an animal lover helping take care of stray animals brought home by her children. She had a special dog, Sadie, that never left her side for many years - a true companion that she cherished tremendously.
Once mom’s grandbabies started arriving, she took great pleasure in taking care of them, making Halloween costumes, taking them out for coffee at the restaurant, just spending time with them in general including attending/watching their sporting events. This was equally true when raising her children – their interests and activities were her priority, as well as making special occasions truly special like birthdays, Christmas, graduations, etc. In addition to her children and grandchildren, she had a very special relationship with her grandson’s friend, Payton, as well as Payton’s parents Shawn and Michelle – they were like her second family and had a special place in her heart.
Later in life mom had some health challenges including Alzheimer’s disease which eventually took over her functioning and required her to be in a care home setting. Dad took care of her up until this time, and was broken-hearted when his life partner could no longer live with him.
Elsie was predeceased by her mother and father, 8 siblings, and several other close relatives. She is survived by her loving husband Clifford and her 3 children Laura (Chris) and their family (Jeff, Elly), Todd (Jenzen) and their family (Taylor, Katie, Tim, Ruby, Noah, Kashton and Everleigh), and Cathy (Cory) and their family (Bradley, Meagen, and Jaxon). She is also survived by her 2 sisters Evelyn and Betty.
Elsie will be forever missed and lovingly remembered by all who loved her, and whom she loved. The family is so thankful for the end of her suffering; may she rest in peace with her maker and all those who passed before her with whom she will now join in heaven.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the caring staff at Golden Prairie Home who showed professionalism and compassion during Mom’s final days: Monique, Tracey, Vicki, Donna and Monique. We can’t thank you enough for helping mom and the family during this especially difficult time.
Cremation has taken place with a private family interment planned in future.
In lieu of flowers, for those inclined, donations can be made in Elsie’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Society of Saskatchewan, 301-2550 12th Avenue, Regina, SK S4P 3X1.
