Jack Paul Joslin, 84, died at Lakeland Regional Medical Center on Wednesday, June 29, 2016 at 11:55am in Lakeland, Florida. He was born April 16, 1932 in Columbus, Indiana, was the son of Anna Mae Scott and S. Paul Joslin. He and his mom moved to Burney in neighboring Decatur County. He was a well-respected laborer at the age of 13 in this small community working for farmers and operating his step father’s hay bailer. He was also trusted by the Burney Grain and Coal Company to drive their trucks to collect corn from the local farmers before he could get licensed at the age of 15. He was also proud to have been the Secretary/Treasurer of his high school class all 4 years. He graduated from (past) Burney High School in May 1950. He was immediately employed by the old Reeves Pulley Company in Columbus, Indiana. In September of 1952, he talked his way into the Navy on his Army physical. The first aircraft carriers he served on included the USS Palau, USS Siboney, USS Leyte and USS Valley Forge as part of the Admiral’s staff in 1952 – 1954. In 1955, he met his wonderful wife-to-be on his birthday in Green Cove Springs, Florida and was transferred soon after to independent duty in Taiwan on a joint communications advisory team for Chang Kai Chek’s army. In 1957, he returned from Taiwan to Florida to marry Emma Jane Perry on November 24. Their honeymoon was concluded by visiting friends in route to his new duty station in Albuquerque, New Mexico. In 1958 to 1962 he participated in the planning and testing of atomic devices both in the US and in the Marshall Islands in the Pacific. He sat in 21 of the 35 high yield nuclear explosions in the Pacific. In 1962, he took a brief discharge from the Navy. He reenlisted after 46 days and made 2 tours of Vietnam in 1963 to 1964 aboard the USS Kitty Hawk. In February 1965, he was with the Naval Attaché at the American Embassy in Cairo, Egypt until the break down in diplomatic relations in June 1967. He was 1 of 10 soldiers at the Embassy unable to evacuate during the 6-day war with Israel until 3 days after the war was over. His family was evacuated on May 27 and he was evacuated on June 13 meeting up with his family in Athens, Greece. His assignment the last 4 years in the Navy was on a briefing team who briefed the Chairman Joint Chiefs, Secretary of the Navy and other high level dignitaries. His Naval Awards consisted of 2 Joint Service Commendation Medals, 5 Good Conduct Awards, the China Service Medal, European Occupation Service Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal. He retired from the Navy in 1971 as a Chief Petty Officer with 20 years of service. He was treated with great respect by both his juniors and seniors and was given some very important assignments. He went to work for the US Postal Service in which he retired after 15 years in 1988. He worked various odd jobs after that until 1999. He was an avid follower of basketball, playing on his high school team and early in his military career. He was a loyal fan of the Orlando Magic. He had fought cancer most of his life. His first cancer was a melanoma in 1960 when he was just 28 years old. He had many skin cancers removed, cancer of the left parotid gland and Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. He was finally given 100% disability by the VA in 2010 which was backdated to 2006. He was a member of the Fleet Reserve Association (FRA), American Legion, Navy Memorial and Disabled American Vets (DAV). Preceded in death his wonderful wife, Emma Jane (Perry) Joslin (2004) of 46 ½ years, his mother, Anna Mae Scott (2001), his father, S. Paul Joslin (1988) and his stepfather Dennis Scott (1984). Survivors include 4 daughters; Janice Jane Cordua (Fred), Judith Anne Hall (Randy), Jill Elaine Henry (Todd) and Julie Elizabeth Joslin; 2 sons; Jerald Paul Joslin and Jay Emory Joslin; 10 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; half-brother Gerel Scott of Lewis Center, Ohio; half-sister S. Paula Boes of Kentucky. Visitation will be held from 11am to 12pm on Tuesday, July 12, 2016 at the Baldwin Fairchild Goldenrod Chapel located at 7520 Aloma Avenue in Winter Park, Florida. Funeral Services will follow officiated by the American Legion. Internment will immediately follow the funeral service at Chapel Hill Cemetery located at 2424 Harrell Road in Orlando, Florida with Military graveside rites. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Legion, Pine Castle Branch in Orlando, Florida or to the local American Cancer Society.
