Charles (Chas) McKinley Johnson 89 of Maitland passed away at home surrounded by family, on August. 4, 2020. Chas was born in Baltimore, Maryland on August 5, 1930. He grew up in Brooklyn in South Baltimore where he attended Southern High School and met and married his high school sweetheart, Doris Pearl Simonds. Chas lettered in Baseball, Basketball and Football and in 1949 signed a minor league contract with the Detroit Tiger Organization and played through the 1952 season. While with the Tigers he told the scout about a kid named Al Kaline at Southern High. Charles was hired by Glenn L. Martin Aircraft Company where he worked for the next 40 years, in Baltimore, Denver, and Orlando, until his retirement from the Martin Marietta Company in Orlando, Florida in January 1993. He loved to travel, watch sports and coached his sons and grandsons in baseball. Charles is survived by his wife of 68 years, Doris; his children David W (Kathleen), Brenda Lynn (Chuck) and Mark Charles; sister in law Shirley (Ken); Grandchildren Melissa, Brian, Scott, Charles (Maria), Christine (Jeff), Theresa (Johnny), and also Christina (predeceased). Charles also has 4 great grandchildren. A private Service will be held on Monday, August 10th at 11 AM at Baldwin Fairchild Funeral Home Aloma Ave Winter Park. Interment will be held 12:30 PM at Glen Haven Memorial Park for all that wish to attend.
