Carla (Sorensen) Schlegel was born to Christ and Mary (Johnsen) Sorensen July 27, 1918 in Yankton SD. She was raised on the family farm just outside of Vermillion, SD. Mrs. Schlegel graduated from The University of South Dakota, where she was very active with the Chi Omega Sorority. She returned to the University to work for I.D. Weeks, who was University President from 1935 to 1966, before moving to Chicago where she married Russel Schlegel. Russel’s career as a corporate executive meant they traveled extensively and lived at various locations throughout the country before retiring to Florida in 1978. They moved to The Village on the Green in Longwood, Florida in 1993, where Mrs. Schlegel was living at the time of death.
Mrs. Schlegel very much enjoyed golf, playing almost to age 90, as well as bocce ball and her retirement community activities. Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, brother Morten Sorensen, and Sister-in-law Norma Sorensen. She is survived by her niece Nancy (Sorensen) Clark (Omaha NE); nephews Kirk (Dawn Nelson) Sorensen (Vermillion SD); Scot (Mary) Sorensen (Yankton SD); step-son Allen Schlegel (Edmond OK); grandsons Steven Schlegel (Edmond OK), Kevin Schlegel (Carlsbad CA and their mother Violet Dyer; and grandson Bradley Roselle (Omaha NE).
