Robert “Duke” Moore, age 79, formerly of Turtle Creek and Plum Borough, PA, peacefully passed away in Orlando, Florida on January 12, 2024, surrounded by the love of his daughters. Duke was a beloved father, a courageous Vietnam War veteran, a distinguished Bronze Star recipient, and a friend to everyone.
Born on December 17, 1944, Duke not only served his country with honor but also dedicated years to coaching his daughters in club and high school soccer. His passion for sports extended to playing in many softball and basketball leagues throughout his life, embodying the spirt of competition and camaraderie. Duke was an ardent supporter of the Pittsburgh Steelers, finding joy in cheering for his favorite team alongside family and friends.
As a father, Duke was a pillar of strength and support for his three daughters, Charise Scharfeld, Dionne Veitch, and Tiffany Vincent. His influence extended beyond the soccer field, leaving an enduring impact on their lives. Duke’s legacy lives on through the values of hard-work, resilience, teamwork, and determination that he instilled in each of them. In his later years, he relished the time with his family, and sometimes the most, his fur-grandchildren, of which there are many.
In addition to his daughters and their husbands, Greg Scharfeld, Jeff Veitch, and Matt Vincent, Duke is survived by his cherished seven grandchildren, Cela Veitch-Beck (Matthew Beck), Celeste Veitch, Colton Scharfeld, Ava Veitch, Davis Scharfeld, Isabella Vincent, and Nicoletta Vincent, and his ex-wife and the mother of his daughters, Celeste Nelson (Wilt). He also leaves behind his brother, Jim Moore, sister, Betty Jean LaMarca, as well as his cherished nieces and nephews.
Duke dedicated a significant part of his career to the Allegheny Port Authority until his retirement, after which he embraced the joy of spending time with family and friends. An avid golfer, he enjoyed the winter months in Florida with Charise and her family. Duke’s social nature made him a true social butterfly, and he cherished his times at the Turtle Creek VFW and ELKs club, where he also served in key leadership positions.
As we celebrate the life of Robert “Duke” Moore, let us remember the moments of the joy he shared on the soccer field, the camaraderie during Steelers games, and the love he bestowed upon his family. May he find eternal peace, surrounded by the warmth of his family’s love and the memories of a life well-lived.
