Mary Helen LaPointe (Sims), 72, of Marathon, FL passed away from natural causes on Sunday, October 18, 2020. She is preceded in rest by her mother, Juanita Holten Sims and father, Charlie David Sims. Helen is survived by her husband, Louis (Capt. Buddy) LaPointe of Marathon, FL, daughters Christine Claire LaPointe of Marathon, FL and Mary Lynne Marzak (LaPointe), husband Derek Marzak, and grandson John Dylan Marzak, of Roswell GA.
Helen was fond of all animals, especially birds. Her favorite was the soaring frigate bird to which she was certain it would be a special day upon rare sighting.
Helen’s love of arts and crafts was undeniable. She started off with watercolor painting, learning much in a short time from several talented locals. Before long she transitioned from small simple paintings to creating incredible wall murals throughout the home. This quickly evolved into Scrapbooking, Sewing, Jewelry Making, Drawing, Calligraphy, and Rubber stamping.
In recent years, she enjoyed studying her family’s genealogy in which she frequently gifted family history books during special occasions. She may well hold a record for most hours logged on to Ancestory.com.
Helen’s zeal for life and love for her family was easily recognized. Talents aside, she would undoubtedly say that the birth of her children, and becoming a grandmother were the happiest moments in her life. She was very involved in her children’s activities growing up, and was even the “Band Mom” for Marathon Highschool Marching Dolphins.
Funeral arrangements will take place in Helen’s hometown of Winter Park, FL, and a memorial service will take place at Palms Cemetery. Friends are welcome to attend the service (11:30 AM), share memories and condolences with the family.
