Beatrice Baker Hester, born on June 20, 1937 in Raleigh, NC.
He attended Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC and graduated in 1960. He then earned his PhD in philosophy at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN and returned to WFU as a faculty member. Marcus
taught generations of students how to think and introduced them to Aristotle, Plato, and logic.
He retired after 43 years.
Marcus enjoyed a full life with many interests. He frequently read biographies and told stories
about his own experiences. His prized possession was his 1966 red Porsche 912, bought
directly from the factory and still owned and running over 60 years later. He loved to spend time
at his mountain cabin, hiking and trout fishing. He loved music and played classical guitar. He
believed in service to others and volunteered at the Samaritan Inn soup kitchen for 25 years.
Marcus dabbled in several other hobbies, including photography and astronomy, always curious.
He is survived by his wife, Anne Lashley Hester, his son, Marcus Hill Hester, and step-children
Brandon Carr, Lisa Carr, and step-granddaughter E’va Weber.
The family would like to thank Carol and Jessica Hargrave for their loving care during Marcus’
last year, as well as the staff at the KBR Hospice Home during his last days.
To honor Marcus’ love of cooking and service to others, donations may be made in his name to
the Samaritan Kitchen or the World Central Kitchen.
