James H. Stephens went to be with his Lord and Savior on January 25, 2022 in Pfafftown, North Carolina. He was a devoted husband and family man. His sense of humor and joyfulness will be missed by all who knew him.
James was born in Greenville County, South Carolina on July 13, 1932 to the late Toy Wofford Stephens and Pallie Arnold Stephens. He worked for Stone Manufacturing in Greenville, South Carolina where he retired as a supervisor after 45 years. At Stone, he was lovingly nicknamed “Doc” due to his ability to fix anything. His skill for crafting and tinkering spilled into his time away from work. James could always be found building, woodworking, or fixing something. His love of working with his hands contributed to his love of gardening as well. James truly had a green thumb. He took pride in his flowers and vegetable and fruit gardens.
He was a longtime member of Bible Baptist Church in Simpsonville, South Carolina.
James was an avid sports enthusiast. He enjoyed watching and playing softball and baseball. His heart filled with joy when he got to watch his children and grandchildren play the sport he loved so much. He attended all of the games he could. Later in his life, James discovered his love for golf. He looked forward to his tee times with his brothers-in-law.
He leaves behind his loving wife of 67 years, Olena Richardson Stephens; children, Scott Stephens (Tese) and Tabetha Mabe (Jamie); grandchildren, Hunter Stephens (Abbie), Truett Mabe, and Bryce Mabe; great grandchildren, Emmie Marie Stephens and Owen Scott Stephens; siblings-in-law, Tom Berrier, Pete Clark, Huberta Stephens, Peggy McCarter, and Pat Johnson; and many nieces, nephews, and loved ones. In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his siblings, Evelyn Waters, Shelby Berrier, Shirley Clark, and Willie Stephens.
A committal service will be held on Friday, January 28th at 10am at Vogler Funeral & Cremations at Forsyth Memorial Park in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, January 30th at 1pm at Bible Baptist Church in Simpsonville, South Carolina.
