Gregory Harmon Munger

Born on March 27, 1952 in Indianapolis, Indiana to Raymond and Doris Munger, Greg was the loving and devoted husband to Bonnie Janine Acree Munger. They were married for forty-nine wonderful years upon his passing into glory.

Greg received his Bachelor of Science in Education degree from Bob Jones University in Greenville, SC. With a strong, lifelong passion for both education and music, Greg served in a wide variety of roles throughout his influential life. While in college he played violin in the orchestra when it recorded the soundtrack for two historical dramatic motion pictures, Sheffey and Flame in the Wind, produced by the University. After a brief time in South Carolina, Greg received a call to serve as the music minister and school teacher at Cedar Forest Baptist Church and School in Winston-Salem, NC. He taught for five years on both the elementary and secondary levels. During the Summer, he started his own painting company, Greg Munger Inc., which served countless customers providing many home improvements with courtesy and craftsmanship.

Always the innovator, Greg founded Piedmont Education Services, an educational testing services firm, in 1987. Over the next thirty-five years he would touch thousands of lives as homeschooling families throughout the state and across the country sought out Greg’s winsome, wise, and expert abilities to guide, administrate, and facilitate curriculum and testing in their homeschooling journey. Additionally, wherever he saw the need, Greg authored or created numerous educational books and media to assist the community in their pursuit of educational excellence. He also served for six years as President of his local homeschool support group, Forsyth Home Educators, while simultaneously serving as the Administrative Vice President for North Carolina’s statewide organization North Carolinians for Home Education. Greg rose to become a notable speaker at the annual NCHE Conference and Book Fair (now dubbed Thrive!) held annually in downtown Winston-Salem, NC.

God expanded Greg’s natural aptitude to teach into a decades-long faithful ministry as elder and Sunday school teacher at his church. Becoming convinced of a need to recover the gospel from obscurity, Greg and his family became founding members of Grace Free-Presbyterian Church in 1987. Under Pastor Reggie Kimbro and along with the remote preaching of Dr. Alan Cairns imparted via cassette tape, Greg grew in his Christian faith exponentially. He diligently studied the Scriptures and then boldly communicated its Truth to his beloved Sunday school class. Over decades he taught faithfully, lifting up the Word of God as the touchstone for every single area of life and preaching the person and work of Jesus Christ as the Book’s central focus, indeed, the center of all history.

He is survived by his 92 year old mother, Doris Munger; sister (& her husband) Susan (Dane) Smith; his faithful wife of forty-nine years, Bonnie; sons (& their wives), Paul (Sheilah) and Eric (Jessica) Munger; daughters (& their husbands), Amy (David) Becker and Lydia (Derrick) Bowman; seventeen grandchildren: Anna-Grace (Lee) Messer; Audrey, Emma, Ethan, Kyle, Kaleb, Isaac, Ilise, and Clint Munger; Kirsten and Courtney Becker; Alyssa (Adam) Choquette; Nolan, Hudson, Maggie, and Machen Bowman; and Damien Smith. Greg will forever be remembered as the family patriarch, loved by all more than words can ever express.

The visitation will be held Friday, May 5, 2023 from 6 - 8 PM at Forsyth Memorial Park, 3815 Yadkinville Rd, Winston-Salem, NC 27106. A service commemorating his life and worshipping his Savior will be held on Saturday, May 6, 2023 at 10:30 AM at the same facilities, with a graveside service to follow for his final earthly resting place.
