Ellen grew up in Yadkin County, NC, but had lived in Winston-Salem for most of her adult life. She was preceded in death by her parents, America C. Johnson and Henry Clay Johnson, 5 brothers, 3 sisters, 2 half brothers and 2 half sisters. Her beloved husband of almost 60 years, Wallace Lee (Buddy) Gough passed away in 2008. We know their reunion was a joyous one.
She was a graduate of West Yadkin High School where she met her future husband. They married and started a family. Later she attended Winston-Salem Business College where she graduated with honors. She worked as a bookkeeper until she retired. She was a long time member of Brookstown United Methodist Church. She was a gifted musician, and she shared her love of music with her church family, playing organ, piano, and singing in the choir. She also served as choir director for a time. She enjoyed gardening and she and Buddy always planted a huge garden. They raised all types of vegetables, which they loved to share with their neighbors. She also loved to cook and was known for her homemade spaghetti sauce, barbecue, dill pickles, cakes and pies. She also loved to bowl and was a member of several bowling leagues. In her later years she enjoyed reading, puzzles, and card games. Her normally calm demeanor was replaced by a fierce competitiveness when playing card games, board games, and especially putt putt. She showed no mercy toward her opponents!
Ellen is survived by a son, Lanny Gough (Sherry) of Clemmons, two daughters, Beverly Gough (Darla Latham) of Pfafftown, and Beth Eubanks (Larry), also of Clemmons, 5 grandchildren, Rebecca Lee, Ashley Gough Bradford, John Gough, Lee Eubanks and Josh Eubanks, as well as 10 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by two brothers-in-law, Paul Gough and Jerrell Gough (Linda), and three sisters-in-law, Mary Frances Wilmoth, Jackie Gough and Mary Lee Roberts.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, November 30th in the mausoleum chapel at Forsyth Memorial Park.
The family wishes to express their love and gratitude to the wonderful staff at Trinity Elms Assisted Living in Clemmons for their extraordinary care of Ellen over the last 4 ½ years. In addition, thank you to Trellis Palliative Care, who provided end of life care with grace and dignity.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Lutheran Services, or Trellis Palliative Care.
