Bernard was born in Fort Jefferson, NY on November 2, 1949 to the late Mitchell Dutchnowski and Aline Hill. He was always strong-willed; stubborn some would say. Bernard would always persevere. Bernard was legally blind since the age of 10, but he never let that stop him. He enjoyed playing baseball, woodworking, and farming. He worked as a firefighter for over 20 years in Coram even the first and only blind paramedic in Coram. After his retirement, Bernard went to work for the Industries for the Blind.
Bernard had such a large heart. He was compassionate and cared deeply for others. Throughout his life he adopted and cared for many children. He went out of his way to love others.
Anyone who knew Bernard will miss his loyalty and unwavering sense of humor.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Melody Johnson, and brother, Michael Urban. He leaves behind his wife of 13 years, Wendy Urban; children, Melissa (Gregory) Cox, Grace Urban, and Mary Arrington; stepchildren, Seth Holland, Adam LaValley, Troy Hartford, and Kantrell Hartford; 15 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; sisters, Sue (Bob) LaLande and Robin Urban; and numerous other family members and friends.
