"When he was a teenager, Walter Jozwiak fainted. His parents, both Polish and unable to speak English well, tried to tell the neighbours that Walter had passed out but instead informed them that he had passed on.
That announcement was six decades too early.
Walter, 73, died on July 21, 2022. He was predeceased by his parents, Anna and Antoni.
Born in Szczecin, Poland, Walter came to Canada with his family in the late 1950s. While teaching in northern Manitoba, Walter met Paula. They married in Winnipeg in 1978 and had three children: Jennifer, Lauren (Malcolm), and Sebastian (Susan).
Walter loved spirited debates, good wine, and cycling—but not necessarily in that order. He competed in the 1967 Pan American games, was a multiple-time national cycling champion, and opened Lifesport—now a mainstay of the Winnipeg cycling community—in 1974. Walter never stopped riding: he cycled every Wednesday night and Sunday morning, and toured Italy by bicycle with friends in 2019.
To honour Walter, please consider donating to neuroscience or traumatic brain injury research, or just getting on your bike.
A Come and Go Reception will be held, from 2:00 - 4:00 pm, Saturday, July 30, 2022 at Thomson In the Park Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Boulevard, Winnipeg, MB.
"Safe riding, Walter."
