He was born on December 21, 1927 to Wilfred and Beatrice Taylor (Phillips) in Brandon, Manitoba, the eldest of five children. He married his childhood sweetheart, Eva Bannister of Port Arthur, Ontario on September 18, 1948.
A strong Christian faith guided Vernon’s life. He graduated from Western Pentecostal Bible College in Winnipeg in 1949 and his first pastoral charge was the isolated northern town of Sherridan, Manitoba.
Next, Vernon returned to Port Arthur and worked in business for a period of eight years where he successfully managed a sheet metal and heating business. He once again felt the call of ministry and pastored a number of churches in the Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario District. As well as being a very caring pastor, he was able to bring strong practical skills to the profession. He was responsible for many building projects and furnace installations in the district churches. Vernon was also a gifted bass soloist and was proficient at numerous musical instruments. He also encouraged others to pursue their musical talents. He enjoyed fellowship with other clergy from all denominations and fondly remembered his leadership in the Thunder Bay Council of Clergy. Prior to retirement in 1989, Vernon was the District Superintendent for Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario, Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada. His organizational and business skills served him well in this role.
Vernon is lovingly remembered by his wife Eva of 71 years; sons Gordon (Doris), David (Barbara) and Douglas; grandchildren Jennifer (Leonard), Jeffrey (Nicole) and Melanie (Evan); great-grandchildren Olivia, Rhys, Javan, Brooke-Lyn, Ethan and Jaxon; sisters Vange and Sheila; sisters-in-law Fern and Darleen; son-in-law Gary; and former son-in-law Gaston (Kim). He was predeceased by his parents, Wilfred and Beatrice; daughter Laura; and brothers Clifford and Wesley.
The family would like to thank all the doctors, nurses and care staff at Tuxedo Villa for their care during his last years.
In lieu of flowers, as an expression of sympathy, donations may be made to Emergency Relief and Development Overseas (ERDO) or to a charity of your choice.
