In the quiet morning hours of Thursday, September 3, 2015 at the age of 101, Verna peacefully passed away. She will be sadly missed by her sister Eleanor, sister-in-law Bernice, and many nieces and nephews, especially her niece Sandra Smerek and her nephew Wayne Oleschuk and their families.
Verna was predeceased by her loving husband Frank, as well as her brothers and sisters, Bill, Stanley, Eddy, Nellie and Amy.
Verna was born and lived in Winnipeg all of her life. As a young woman, she pursued a career as an elementary teacher in East Kildonan, eventually becoming a guidance counselor at St. Johns High School where she ended her successful career.
She loved teaching and considered every child she dealt with important, encouraging them to follow their dreams to success. Verna loved to travel, and during her lifetime visited many places, met many interesting people, and had many wonderful adventures. She loved to paint, particularly pictures of nature, listen to music, and when she was able to, watch hockey on T.V.
After her retirement, she spent many winters enjoying her home in Phoenix, Arizona and also in Victoria, B.C.
For the last three years, Verna was residing at Kildonan Personal Care Home. The family wishes to thank all of the staff at the home for their wonderful care, kindness and compassion that was given to her each and every day. She was especially fond of Chelsea who put a smile on her face every day.
A celebration of life will be held on Thursday, September 10, 2015 at 2:00pm at Green Acres Funeral Home and Cemetery, Hwy #1 East at Navin Road, Winnipeg, Manitoba. Interment and reception to follow.
Rest in peace… we will all miss you dearly.
