And hand and hand on the edge of the sand they danced by the light of the moon .....and the love story continues....Vera (Theresa) Ford passed from this world to reunite with her husband of 67 years Douglas Ford.
In addition to Douglas, she was preceded by her sister Jo Robinson, her brother Jim Asker, and her infant brother Tom Asker.
She will be loving remembered by her daughters, Kathy Rusnak (Dale Rusnak), Maggie Ford (Gerald Chartier), Granddaughter, Meagan Rusnak (Eddie Bardana), Grandson, Garrett Rusnak (Nicole Austen), Great grandsons, Adrian, and Tristan Bardana.
Vera was the second oldest daughter of Mary and George Asker. Mom grew up in East Kildonan where she lived for much of her life. Although not formally educated Mom was a life-long learner. She was an avid reader and was always ready and able to discuss current events and the happenings in the world, as well as the current golf tournament on TV.
Mom married Dad in 1947 and from that moment they were a team, doing everything together from traveling, to building houses, to raising 2 daughters.
Mom and dad lived for many years in Phoenix Arizona where they loved to golf and enjoy the warm weather. Never one to sit still, unless she was reading, Mom took up billiards, joining a ladies billiards group and in the process becoming a respectable player on the team. To fulfill her creative side Mom immersed herself in every craft imaginable from knitting, sewing, crocheting, paper tole art, drawing and anything else that struck her fancy. We claim that is why Mom and Dad lived well into their 90s as they were able to escape the cold Manitoba winters. When summer arrived, they were happy to be back at their house in Grand Marais in the home that they built together.
After Dad died Mom moved into an assisted living residence which provided her company and the opportunity to participate in activities. At the age of 93 she discovered the game of bridge with the help of her friend Elaine and loved it. Many nights were spent playing and of course winning! Mom had a very competitive nature. She also began to spend time in art classes; she wanted to paint and so she did. Mom was a music lover and would attend all the concerts held at her home residence. Once Mom became legally blind many of her activities were curtailed but she remained positive and did what she could to stay active.
At the beginning of May, Mom suffered a stroke from which she did recover, but was also diagnosed with cancer. She remained at Seven Oakes Hospital for 6 weeks, then moving to Jocelyn House Hospice where she died a week after arriving. Our family would like to acknowledge the health care professionals at Seven Oakes hospital that cared for Mom with such kindness and respect. We would also like to thank the health professionals at Jocelyn House for their loving care. Mom was very fortunate to spend her last days in such a peaceful environment.
To the women from Home Care and the Nurses who were always there for Mom over the last several years, she called you her angels and we cannot begin to thank you for all that you did for Mom. To Eva Cachero you are an amazing woman; Mom loved you like a daughter.
Flowers are respectfully declined, but if you are so inclined a donation made to Jocelyn House Hospice or any animal shelter in Mom’s name would be appreciated.
A private family service will be held.
