Shirley Choy King Chan

March 17, 1938 – December 20, 2022

It is with great sadness that we announce the loss of our mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend Shirley Choy King Chan. While in the care at Oakview Extendicare Place, Shirley passed away peacefully at the age of 84.

Left to mourn and cherish her memory are her spouse Gordon Yue Song Chan, her children Ronald (Jeannie), Lana (Bruce), Valerie (Benny), Shanna (Brent), and grandchildren Alexander, Evan, Daniel, Marley, Cade & Laine.

Shirley was predeceased by her brothers Wai Sang and Hap Sang. Siblings left to mourn, sister Tsui Chun (Sun Woon), and sisters in-law Yue Harp and Yee Chong.

Born in Taishan, Guangdong China, Shirley immigrated to Canada where she married Gordon in 1958. They started their family in 1959 while living in downtown Winnipeg. Their growing family moved to St. James where they still reside.

Shirley discovered ballroom dancing where it quickly became one of her favourite passions. She spent many years refining her Tango, creating and assembling her dance outfits, and dancing the night away locally and on her cruise vacations with her many dance friends. Her other interests included gardening, jewelry designing, sewing, going to casinos, and travelling and cruising.

Shirley was a benefactor to her and Gordon’s birth villages, providing monetary donations to the secondary school, building a roadway into the village, and erecting a roadside shelter pagoda for the residents.

The family would like to express their thanks to the staff at Oakview Extendicare Place for their amazing care of Shirley in her final years.

Viewing will be held on January 05, 2023 from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm with the funeral service to follow on January 06, 2023 at 10:30 am at Thomson Funeral Home, 669 Broadway.

Interment will follow at noon at Brookside Cemetery, 3001 Notre Dame.
