Margaret passed away on June 6, 2020 at the age of 72 at Riverview Health Centre.
She leaves behind her sister Patricia Locken (Roger), her two sons Jeff (Nicky) and Ryan (Karly) as well as two grandchildren Jack and Madeleine. She is predeceased by her husband Brant Haddad, and parents Jack and Winnifred Wassell.
Growing up on Sherburn Street, Margaret enjoyed baton twirling and tap dancing at Orioles Community Club. She attended Tec Voc high school where she played the French horn, wrote for the student newspaper, was editor of the yearbook and was valedictorian of her graduating class. Margaret then chose a career in the business world as a receptionist and secretary beginning her career at Great-West Life and supplementing her income by typing for university students. She worked hard to raise her two sons, becoming an executive assistant for Genstar Building Materials, Child & Family Services and the highlight of her career being hired as the executive assistant to the Minister of Family Services and working at the legislative building.
Margaret was a lobbyist to the end. She was passionate about making an impact wherever she saw a need.
As a young mother, she developed a lunch program at her sons’ elementary school to help the community provide lunchtime supervision. She also mobilized the right resources to get a new gym floor at her sons’ high school. After retiring, she and Brant relocated to Victoria Beach. Seeing the population of aging permanent residents in the area, she joined the Board of the East Beaches Regional Complex Inc. and was involved in establishing a mobile medical clinic that would regularly visit the area.
Margaret was socially engaged and always loved to entertain or attend an event. She and Brant made many friendships wherever they lived, finding neighbors to care for and to be cared by. Margaret became heavily involved in public policy for the Victoria Beach area, attending many public meetings and always willing to offer her opinion and support an initiative. She leaves two significant legacies to the area. She established a weekly “Country Market” to support the local community club but also to create a social opportunity that enriches the community to this day. Most recently, she along with friend, Joanne Gibson, produced an overwhelmingly successful musical called “VB the Musical”, which brought together many families to share in the 100-year history of the Victoria Beach area.
Margaret loved to travel and enjoyed many adventures with her husband Brant. She also enjoyed writing and wrote several articles for the local newspaper and other publications. Most of all she loved her friends and family and instilled in her sons strong values that have served them well. She will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts.
Due to the current circumstances, a private service and interment will take place in the coming week.
