December 15, 1921 – March 16, 2013
With saddened hearts we announce the passing of our Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother. Mom was predeceased by her parents William and Isabel McSkimming, husbands Ron Harper and Bill Brust, brothers William and Robert, sisters, Vi, Florence and Ruth and granddaughter Jessica.
She leaves behind to miss her smile, laughter and wonderful sense of humour; daughters Barb Shlanda, Billie Blancher (Greg), Debbie Stevenson (Don), Cathy Erickson (Allen) and sons Howie Brust (Karyn) and Jim Brust. Grandchildren, Tiffany, Lisa, Clayton, Warren, Brandy, Dustin, Kristina, Crystal and Billy and 15 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mom was a longtime member of the Fort Rouge Legion and Ladies Auxiliary. She spent many happy hours there. She loved her bingo and of course her Saturday night poker games with the girls. Mom made many friends through the Legion and unfortunately saw many of them pass. Mom spent her life caring for others, starting when she was in her early teens when her mother passed on. Being the oldest daughter the responsibility of caring for her younger siblings was given to her. She married Ron Harper just before WWII and on February 14, 1944 she received a telegram advising of Ron’s death. Mom and Barb were on their own. Bill Brust came into mom’s life and together had five more children. Sometimes we thought she cared too much, at the beach I’m sure we could have gone deeper than our ankles without the fear of drowning but we obeyed her until she went to the bingo hall and had Dad in charge of us. We used to always tease her about this, but it worked, none of us drowned.
Near the end of her time we had a great difficulty in convincing her to give up her independency of apartment living and moving where she would finally have someone looking after her for a change. Thanks to Tuxedo Villa for helping us care for her.
We will had a Tea at the Fort Rouge Legion, 426 Osborne Street, Monday April 8th, 2013 between 1:00 pm and 4:00 pm
Rest in peace mom and we know you will have a lot of family and friends waiting for you.
