My deepest belated sympathies to Jean’s loved ones on her untimely passing, which I have only learned of now.  We were in high school together, she was the smartest person in our class and I was a lost rebel without a care nor a clue.  She must’ve taken pity on me because we had a standing arrangement regarding accountancy - she would leave her suitcase outside our class every morning, with her accountancy homework in the first divider for me to copy and so avoid having to pay yet another visit to Matt Minnie’s office for ‘6 of the best.’

After high school I saw her once at a gathering of mutual friends in Hillbrow.  She was studying at Wits and there was never any doubt she would excel at whatever she chose to do. I’ve often wondered what became of you Jean, and it is with sadness that I learn you’re no longer with us. I have never forgotten your kindness, your wit nor your smile. Your light clearly burned bright wherever your path took you.  May you rest in peace.

What a tragic loss. Jean was an incredible support and pioneer in the film community. I will cherish memories of her. 

Jean and I met while at university in South Africa and first served together as office bearers in a student organization (AIESEC). We became good friends, and then lovers, and then lived together before she moved to Canada and geography took its toll on our relationship. The years we spent together as romantic partners were among the happiest of my life – we shared many an amazing adventure, including much travel and time in nature with our cameras, a pastime that we both loved. If I had to describe the Jean that I knew and loved, the words that come to mind are naturally elegant, gentle, creative, sensitive, observant, conscientious, determined, adventurous, fun, and kind. 

In recent years we became closer again (thanks to technology) and earlier this year I was blessed to spend a special afternoon and dinner date with her in person during her brief visit back to South Africa. It felt just like the good old times, and I treasure the memory. She always disliked posing for photos and so refused to pose for one during our dinner but fortunately, my mother insisted on taking one of us when we both met up with her earlier that day, and I can share that here.

Jean, I miss you and you will have a special place in my heart forever.  Rest in peace.


I first met Jean when we were both working for Manitoba Opera.  I was an ASM on MacBeth and she was Publicist.  Since then Jean and I worked together at Buffalo Gal Pictures .  We were the BBT team.  I did the board and budget for new projects and Jean did the tax credit estimates.  We roomed together at TIFF.  Always... no matter which direction our lives turned, Jean was a constant.  I will miss her very much.

Condolences to Jean's family and friends for this untimely loss of a beautiful human being.  She was part of our Alberta Vipassana meditation community in  the past,  helping with registration and bringing happiness to others.  She will be greatly missed.

I worked as Jean’s PA many years ago. I always thought she was the most exotic white person i had ever met.  I will miss working with her, i will miss her.  

Jean and I volunteered together for Alberta Vipassana Foundation's meditation centre, Dhamma Karuna. Even though she could not be at the centre very often, she helped review applications for courses. Reading about her other volunteer work, as well as a brilliant career, it does not surprise me that she smilingly helped out wherever and whenever asked.  May she be happy, peaceful and liberated. 

Jean was a dear friend who always had a smile on her face and always filled with words of encouragement.  I will miss all of the work and social times we spent together.  I am a better person for having known Jean....I will miss her every single day for the rest of my life.

Jean du Toit was a good friend and colleague who I will greatly miss, (along with so many others). We often discussed films & TV shows and collaborated to develop and pitch a few projects over the years. Her support, enthusiasm and compassion were invaluable to me. This week, I had planned to send her a draft of a script I've written that contains these lines: 

"You might not be aware of it, but we all have two lists of people in our heads. The first is a list of people that wouldn’t surprise us by dying young. Health issues, lifestyle choices, assholery. Might even be wishful thinking. The second list are people so full of life and love and positivity, we never consider the possibility of them dying. I figure I’m on most people’s first list."  

Jean was definitely on my second list. 
She is missed. ❤️
