It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of James Douglas (Doug) Nichol, beloved father, grandfather, brother and friend, at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg. Left to mourn his passing are daughter Boudicca (Zak), grandchildren Harlon and Tomyris-Juniper, sisters Judy (Jim), Kelly (Gabe), and Ardis (Kevin), nephews James (Jen) and Mark (Courtney), nieces Jillian (Brent) and Lauren (Kam), great nephew Jake, great niece Jessie, cousins and many friends. Doug also leaves behind his much loved dog Buster. Doug was predeceased by his parents Jim and Chris.
Doug was an avid reader from an early age. He read widely and was particularly fond of fantasy and science fiction. He was one of the original Trekkies, watching the TV show Star Trek from episode one. Some of his favourite times were spent with friends at Keycon, which he attended as a Klingon warrior.
He liked to write and spin a good yarn. He listened to the blues and jazz and was very fond of opera. He also enjoyed cooking and eating good food. He had a penchant for spearmint leaves and wine gums, black coffee, and the occasional dram of good scotch.
Doug loved animals and he often took in strays. He adopted his dog Buster, when no one else would, and remained steadfast in his commitment to him.
Doug had a loyal and generous spirit and he gave freely of himself and his time to his family and friends. He was always willing to lend a hand or an ear. He had a quick sense of humour and chose to see the good in people wherever possible. One of his greatest joys was spending time with his family, especially his daughter and grandchildren.
He never complained as he experienced increasingly dire health challenges over the last few years of his life. During his last weeks, which were spent in the hospital, he faced his death with grace, humility and awe-inspiring courage. He will live forever in the hearts and memories of those who knew and loved him.
The family would like to convey a special thank you to Sherry Wiebe and her mother Joan for their friendship and generous support during the last year of his life. Their kindness to Doug and Buster meant more to him than words can express.
The family would also like to thank the staff on GA4 and the MICU at the Health Sciences Centre for the commitment, care and compassion extended to Doug and our family in his last weeks.
In keeping with Doug’s wishes, cremation has taken place and his ashes will be interred at Thomson “In the Park”, near his parents.
Please join the family in celebrating Doug’s life at a come and go reception at Thomson “In the Park”, 1291 McGillivray Blvd, Winnipeg, on Sunday, May 29, 2022 between 2:00 and 4:00 pm.
