It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dearest Grant on September 22, 2021 at St. Boniface Hospital following a courageous battle with a lengthy illness.
Left to mourn are his beloved wife Donna Butterworth; mother Marion (stepfather Don) Schultz; sisters Anne (Carl) Barg and Sandra Scott; step-sister Sandie (Domenic) Donato and step-brother Murray (Rhonda) Schultz; mother-in-law Evelyn Butterworth, sister-in-law Karen (Jason) Novak, nieces and nephews, extended family and many friends and colleagues. He was predeceased by his father Alexander Scott and father-in-law Don Butterworth. Grant was an animal lover all his life and was a doting “papa” to dogs Jessie (with whom he has been reunited) and his boy, Crosby.
Grant was born in Winnipeg, growing up in Fort Garry and ultimately making a home with Donna in Waverley Heights. He loved sports, both as a spectator and player. In his younger days, he enjoyed downhill skiing, baseball, was an avid curler and attended many Winnipeg Blue Bomber games with mom Marion. He shared with Donna a passion for hockey and football, spending many evenings together in front of the TV cheering and heckling. He was thrilled with the return of the Winnipeg Jets and enjoyed attending games over the years. He found a passion for golf which had him travelling on group trips with friends and more locally, had years of fond memories with family and friends at Falcon Lake golf course.
All his life, he spent summers in the Lake of the Woods, Ontario area - as a child at Laclu, as a young adult at his sister Anne’s cottage at Louise Lake and eventually at Donna’s family cottage at Rush Bay. After a hard day’s work, Grant loved nothing more than sitting on the dock for some star and moon-gazing on a clear night and listening to the loons in the distance. True to his playful, mischievous nature, he was lovingly known as “fun-cle” by niece Sarah and nephew Drew who would visit each summer. He was a loving uncle to niece Jamie and nephews Kevin and Kyle, even up for the adventures that would come with taking care of them on his own at Anne’s cottage.
Grant had many special memories travelling to Italy and Scotland to visit his sister Sandra. Most recently, he and Donna found a “new-found” love of the east coast, visiting St. John’s, Newfoundland and were planning a return trip before they had even left.
Grant spent his entire career working for the Government of Manitoba with The Property Registry/Teranet. His first position was as a clerk and over years of hard work and achievements, was promoted to examiner, assistant district registrar, paralegal and finally, senior paralegal. After 41 years of dedicated service, he retired in October, 2017. He left behind a legacy of integrity, loyalty and commitment. It was not long thereafter that he felt a desire to continue work in a different capacity and was able to indulge a lifelong interest in mechanics, working on small engine/interior boat repair at Allcraft Mechanical. He so loved sharing stories of the work he was doing - proud to be working with his hands.
This was also evident each winter when he set up a mini workshop in the garage to make ice sculptures, creating a magical ice/light/candle display in the yard. He loved Christmas lights and stayed true to the “more is better” mantra, though careful to not be tacky, or as he and Donna jokingly referred to as “do-da”. He loved to cook and insisted on doing the BBQing (loved his meat). He had a broad interest in TV shows, favorites being Coronation Street, Price is Right, Seinfeld and all things gold mining and history. He loved a variety of music but favorites were James Taylor and Van Morrison – he was so thrilled when he and Donna were able to see them live in concert.
Grant was a generous man, often the first to offer help to a friend working on a project, putting his snowblower to task cleaning driveways for multiple neighbors, and sharing his knowledge about Property Registry when people asked. He had a great sense of humor and seemed to have an endless repertoire of one-liners.
Sadly, in June, 2020, Grant began his long and difficult health journey. His determination and resolve in “staying the fight” was unwavering right to the end.
Thank you to the many, many healthcare heroes and angels that Grant and Donna have met along the way, especially those at Grace Hospital; St. Boniface Hospital - units 6E & ICU, inpatient chemotherapy nurse Van; CancerCare Manitoba Blood & Marrow Transplant Program – Dr. David Szwajcer and Health Sciences Centre transplant team - unit GD6; CancerCare Manitoba St. Boniface unit - Dr. Catherine Moltzan, nurse Kelly, nurse practitioner Margaret and team, who all provided such attentive and compassionate care. You became our extended family and we are forever grateful.
Thank you also to our amazing neighbors, Candace and Daryll Wiley and family who have provided support in so many ways. There are no words.
Cremation has taken place but due to current public health restrictions, interment and Celebration of Life service will be planned for a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation, the Winnipeg Humane Society or a rescue shelter of your choice.
His Journey’s Just Begun
Don’t think of him as gone away
his journey’s just begun,
life holds so many facets
this earth is only one.
Just think of him as resting
from the sorrows and the tears
in a place of warmth and comfort
where there are no days and years.
Think how he must be wishing
that we could know today
how nothing but our sadness
can really pass away.
And think of him as living
in the hearts of those he touched
for nothing loved is ever lost
and he was loved so much.
