After a short but rapid battle with cancer, Christopher Dornn died peacefully in his home with his family – two weeks shy of his 94th birthday.
He is survived by his wife Susie and his children James (Marlene), Arthur (Valerie), David (Carla), Harry, Sonya (Doug) Lockhart and Darcy along with 13 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his parents and all seven of his siblings: Christian, Ronald, Rosie, Elsa, Peter, Mary and, Jake.
He was born in 1930, in Cardston, Alberta to Christian and Rosalia (Henning) Dornn who had immigrated to Canada from Ukraine, Russia only a year earlier. The family moved to Bright, Ontario in 1943, soon after his mother’s passing. He left home when he was 17, with his early working years including stints as a farm hand, service station attendant and equipment operator on a road building crew.
He was a man of unwavering faith whose life was forever changed in 1955 - the winter he read the Bible cover to cover at the request of his father.
He joined the Fairholme Hutterite Colony in Portage la Prairie, MB in the 1950’s and it was there that he met and married Susie Hofer in 1960. With his wife and six children in tow, the family left colony life in 1970 and eventually settled on an acreage outside of Niverville, MB. He spent 25 years working as a courier for United Messenger in Winnipeg.
He was an avid reader, loved to sing from morning to night and found great joy and satisfaction tending to his vegetable garden. He was a people person who could get along with anyone with his easy-going demeanor.
He became and served as an elder for over 40 years in the local Winnipeg church assembly (affiliated with Global Missions Inc), despite having no formal religious education or training. His faithful commitment to God, and his desire to be a good shepherd, served the congregation well.
He leaves behind a legacy of faithfulness, service and selflessness.
