Wanda Jean Armstrong, born February 12, 1932, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on May 10, 2012. She was so gracious, beautiful and witty, right down to her last breath. She was a wonderful momma, wife, sister, aunt, granny, great granny, great great aunt and a wonderful friend to many.
On January 25, 1957, Wanda and “Slats” Jewell Armstrong were married in Las Vegas, Nevada. They made their home in Marysville, California before moving to Winnemucca in 1964 with the “Armstrong Clan” who started the Armstrong Brothers well drilling business. They raised three children here in Winnemucca at which time Wanda worked at the "Sonoma Inn”, “The Red Bull, Humboldt Hotel and last and her most favorite “Keith’s Model T” for Courtney Keith, the owner and founder of the casino restaurant. Mom was known for her fiery red hair and her cascading beehive she wore. Never a hair out of place and always greeted with a smile and a kind word. She was the Fiery Red Head known by many.
Wanda and Slats moved to El Paso in 1977 when he was transferred by his company, Roadway Express”. There they lived until 1993 from which they moved back to Winnemucca to retire. Gardening, raising roses and just relaxing became their hobbies. They had many good years here together.
She is preceded in death by her loving husband Jewell Allen Armstrong; her parents, Grover and Hattie Fielder; sisters Leta, Hazel, Nathalie and Viola; brothers Richard, Joe and David.
She is survived by her niece Wanda Armstrong, Marysville, California; her children, Rick Cook, Debbie Lenhardt and Rod Armstrong; her grandchildren Ricki Lee Cook, Christina Cook, Terrah Jean Archer, T.J. Lenhardt, William Henry and Michael Like Cook; her great grandchildren Zhane Hayburn and newest addition Rheagan Jean Archer; several nephews, nieces, residing in Montana, California and Winnemucca.
At her request, there will be no service held but a celebration of life will be announced at a later date.
The family would like to thank Sherry and Cindy of Humboldt Volunteer Hospice for their kindness and help through this journey; Jeannie and Roy Clarno for always being a part of our family and friends for 46 years; Mr. Art English for being the most wonderful neighbor anyone could ever have and to our extended family and friends for their love, support and comforting ways through her journey and lastly, Albertson Funeral Home for their gracious, respectful manner in handling our loved one. We thank you Crystal, Wayne and Mark. Our best and many thanks to all.
