Condolences to family and friends. RIP in the loving arms of God.

I never met Wayne in person. In fact, I only spoke with him a handful of times over the phone and those regarding business between us.  Yet, a vibrancy and large humanity always came across endearing him to me and I feel a loss in his passing. I wish for those closest to him the consolations of grace. Rest in peace, dear Wayne. 

I did not know Wayne from his radio days but instead worked with him as a newbie in screenwriting not long after he became a script consultant/coach. I first met Wayne when he led a screenwriting workshop at the Detroit-Windsor Film Festival. I asked for his business card because I was so impressed with his enthusiasm for screenwriting and the business of making great movies. We worked on my first draft of a screenplay and to my astonishment he spent 5 hours on a phone conference going over not only my script in detail but breaking down plot lines and devices in other scripts, in particular, Chinatown, which he said was a favorite of his. I called him again for guidance on another film a few years later, and had planned to do so again when I got word of his passing. I had no idea he'd made his living for years in talk radio so I laughed out loud reading about his career here -- now that 5-hour phone call makes so much sense! He was an amazing, smart, fun, interesting human being with an encyclopedic knowledge of movies.  I'm glad I was able to work with him, if only for a short while. My condolences to his family, especially his wife Sandy...

I am sorry to hear of Wayne's passing. He was always enthusiastic, cheerful and witty and lit up every room I've seen him enter.  Wayne's on a different location now, and I expect it's one he's fond of. I will miss him and his emails.

In over 40 years in radio, I made many acquaintences, but only a few friends.  Facebook has distorted the meaning of “friend” but Wayne was a friend in the truest sense of the meaning. I first met Wayne at CHYR in Leamington.  He was a mentor as well as a great teacher of the basics of radio. Even though we went our separate ways, it was good to keep in touch over the years. I hadn’t seen Wayne in over 40 years when he visited Dallas a few years ago. I was amazed that he was still the same. We had a great time and made plans to meet again at a CHYR reunion. Unfortunately, it was not to be. Wayne always spoke fondly of Sandra. I’m sorry we haven’t had a chance to meet. Rest in peace Wayne. You left your mark on radio and the world.

You were the love of Wayne's life and he could not have had his amazing radio career without your support.  My husband recalls the phrase 'She who must be obeyed,' and it was used in the most endearing way.

I was fortunate to work with Wayne at two radio stations - CHML in Hamilton and then CKGL in Kitchener.
He was an entertainer who threw himself into his work and cared deeply for those around him - Wayne was charismatic, kind and one-of-a-kind. 

Thanks for sharing the many cherished photos of Wayne. He clearly lived life to the fullest and left a lasting impression.

Wayne and I were in high school together at Patterson Collegiate in Windsor.  He stood out for several reasons - one, he  was pretty flamboyant; two, he was very intense about acting and movies;  and three, (unlike many of us) he knew exactly what career he wanted to follow. And  he did it - he went out and got a job in radio.  
I visited him in the studio first in Leamington where I was amazed at how professional he was. Then I visited him in Owen Sound where I saw a hint of the provocativeness and maybe outrageousness that sometimes marked his talk radio personna in later years.  It was 1963 and I had just come back from a visit to England. I entered the studio and sat back to watch  as he introduced and spun records. Suddenly he turned to me and told his audience that I had just been in England and knew all about Beatlemania  -  the phenomenon that was just beginning to sweep North America.  He thrust a mike towards me and asked me to give his listeners the inside  story on the Beatles' popularity in Britain. The he grinned and I gasped. 

I lost touch with Wayne for a number of years except for hearing him occasionally on talk radio. Then we reconnected online when people were sharing contacts in advance of the Patterson reunion.  Wayne added me to his Academy Awards email list and linked me to his script consultant site.  A few years ago he was in Toronto for consultancy business and I invited him to stay with us in Newmarket. It was a short visit but it was easy to see the old  Wayne - still a little flamboyant (although more mellow), still exuberant about movies, and still with his rich radio voice. 
That was my last contact with Wayne but I have a strong memory of that visit with its reminders of our friendship decades earlier.

Sandra.  Erna and I extend our deepest condolences.  Wayne  had a very positive influence on my life in the 70's  and it was only because of him that I became an ordained minister.  It changed my life and although I have pursued other directions,  I will never forget the times that Wayne told me that  I could do anything I put my mind to.   He gave me a confidence in myself  that no one else was able to do.  He was truly a remarkable person.  Erna and I cherish the memories  of all of our times together with you and Wayne.

Very sad to hear the passing of Wayne.    I have had the pleasure of working with Wayne, while at Corus Radio in London, Ontario, as his show technical producer/call screener for his Ontario Wide talk show "McLEAN".     Wayne was a character, and truly LOVED what he did.  I will always remember how excited he got, when we knew we had hit the perfect topic on the show, based on who was calling in.   He knew how to truly entertain.     He also knew how to push people's buttons, and enjoyed every minute.   It was my first job out of school and to be honest... one of the best experiences I've ever had, and one I will always remember.   This is truly a loss, but Wayne has truly touched many people, and his memory will live on.

A sad day. Wayne and I sometimes disagreed, but our conversations were stimulating and no one stomped away angry. I will miss him and those conversations. We laughed a lot together, and that's precious. I first met Wayne at CHYR Leamington. I was a rookie and he helped me and supported me. He was a great "radio guy" and loved the work. I reconnected with him recently and treasure our time together. Condolences to his wife Sandra, they were a great team.

Wayne was always a pleasure to have at our dental office.  I was his hygienist and he would always sign or hum while im cleaning his teeth, but he would always sing " sweet Caroline" after the appointment, because my name is Caroline. God Bless his happy soul!

Wayne was a very special person in my life.  While Wayne was a talk show host in Toronto many years ago, I was his producer.  We shared some wonderful radio moments and Wayne's passion for radio made working with him very special.   He will definitely be missed in this world, but the wonderful memories of him will live on.

I am saddened to hear of Wayne's passing. Many years have passed but one of my most memorable moments were the months we were together in California trying to run a radio show on Saturdays. As a young sixteen year old that decided to span out in the world and spread my wings. I could not have had a better adult to show me some of the ways and what I could accomplish. You both have been in my mind and heart all these years. Wayne they are in for a chuckle in heaven when the Wayne McLean morning show starts up. R.I.P my friend.  So long for now until we meet again.

It has been a long time, but Wayne always made lasting impressions on everyone he met.  He was a very influential force in my earlier life.  I will always remember his sense of humour, passion for everything he did, and his and Sandra's generous hospitality on many occasions in their home(s).  My deepest condolences to you, Sandra, and to Larry & Sharon, at this very sad and difficult time.

been a long time since we were together (25 yrs)..he was truly one of a kind.
Like Wayne, both former CHYR Leamington alums, we caused 'trouble' for three years on Wayne's open line show on then still stodgy cfrb1010 toronto.
Wayne starred, and along with  producer and phone maven Eileen B, and myself op-ing, Wayne brought the American-style Jerry Springer-esque 'feigned outrage' spectacle to mid morning radio each day..I worked on alot of shows there then and few if any in toronto were doing this stuff at the time. He was a can/am talk pioneer here in Toronto and I enjoyed all of it and all of the 'tricks of the trade'.
Special thoughts for Sandra and any radio people that Wayne influenced along the way.

Saddened to hear of Wayne’s passing.  I worked with Wayne at Ckww/Cjom.  As an intern In 1979 i watched Wayne work his magic as I sat in on his show.  He had two guests who were angry at each other on air live.  They really  went after each other while he sat back and laughed.  A memory that I will never forget.   He was a legend of the game.   RIP my friend.  



I met Wayne at CJSP upstairs above the hardware store in 1964 the year I started at CKLW as an operator. Wayne was a great guy to meet as he was all radio...he could talk..smile and talk some more about radio between songs. We stayed in touch as he went to CKWW...we both started to move here and there to find our position on radio. I went to CKOC in Hamilton..Wayne was at CFRB Toronto...we lost touch,but I could hear him...I returned to CKLW as a Big 8 jock myself in late 77 and he called me to say congratulations and reminded me about that early day in 1964 upstairs at CJSP...I'll never forget it..or Wayne.

I listened quite regularly to AM580 and called in for contests and numerous talk shows. I appreciate the friends, as Donald De Mers used to do, talking to many on air personalities over the years. My mother attended Patterson High School and spoke fondly of Wayne. I loved interacting on many topics on the phone with Wayne......

Rest In Peace 

I was a university student working part-time at CKWW Windsor in 1974 when I first met Wayne. I had never seen or heard anything like it! His wizardry on talk radio left me slack-jawed. We became good friends. After graduating, I moved away to start my full-time radio career, but was hired back at CKWW in 1978. As the Chief Announcer, Wayne was my boss, and as I was the music director, production manager and announcer, we spent a ton of time together. Wayne was no less a character, but I got great insight into his brilliant radio mind and the strategy behind his "act." We enjoyed many radio lunches ("Better than a TV dinner!") and a radio conference in Toronto, and he introduced me to the Gospel Meeting. As the years went by, we wove in and out of each other's life, but I can tell you that knowing Wayne was an experience in all the best ways, and his mentorship helped me immeasurably. He won't be forgotten.   kevin shea
