Harold Alex ‘Hal’ Miller of Winder passed away on September 16, 2023 after a prolonged illness. He was born in Lenox, Ga. on July 29, 1946 to Harold Birchmore ‘Son’ Miller and Martha Elizabeth Daughtrey. He attended Winder schools, graduating from Winder-Barrow High School in 1964. He attended the University of Georgia, and served in the United States Army from 1967-1969. Passionate about sports, Hal worked as sports editor at the Winder News. He covered countless Winder-Barrow, Apalachee, and other local sporting events in his career as a journalist. He served on the Winder-Barrow Hall of Fame Committee and he was an avid UGA fan.
Hal was the official statistician for WBHS and maintained meticulous records for many years. He covered sports long enough to write about and compare second generation athletes to their parents.
He was awarded numerous plaques and certificates for his sports coverage by The Georgia Press Association including multiple first places in The Winder News circulation division. Hal was also a member of the Georgia High School Association.
He is preceded in death by his parents and by his brother James Hendry Miller, Sr. He is survived by sister-in-law Ann Miller of Winder; nephew John Kater (Rebecca Diane) Miller, grand-nephew Isaac James William, and grand-niece Isla Jasmine of Fredericksburg, Va.; nephew James Hendry (Tarah Luke) Miller, Jr. of Stockbridge, Ga.; and aunt Louise Mathis of Ocala, Fl. Hal is also survived by long-time friends Debbie and Mike Burgamy of Dacula, Ga. and several beloved cousins in Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, and Tennessee.
