Mr. Westbury was raised in Conyers, Georgia where he later relocated to Calhoun and Cartersville, Georgia and ultimately moved to Winder where he currently resided with his family. He was an avid sports enthusiast having played for the University of Georgia’s football team in 1978. Gary continued his love for sports throughout his life where he coached a variety of sports at the Barrow County Recreation Department. He served the United States faithfully in the Marine Corp as an air traffic controller and as an expert rifleman. Gary was raised of the Baptist faith and became of the Catholic faith later in life. He was a member of St. Matthews Catholic Church.
Mr. Westbury purchased Winder Health Care from the Russell family in 1999. He served as the long term health care administrator while his wife served as the licensed practical nurse for nearly 40 years. Together they dedicated their life to service and caring for others. His family was the early pioneers of the Georgia Health Care Association.
Mr. Westbury is preceded by his mother; Billie Mundy Whatley.
Mr. Westbury is survived by his loving wife; Julie Vchulek Westbury; sons, Samuel Charles Westbury, John Michael (Paulina Kelsey) Westbury, Peter Joseph Westbury, and Daniel Patrick Westbury; daughters, Billie Elizabeth Westbury and Jessica Mae (Jimmie) Mack; father, Philip Westbury; twin brother, Greg (Carol) Westbury and Joey Westbury; sister Phyllis (Jerry) Elder; grandchildren, Easton Westbury, Britten Michael Allen, Madison-Kate Westbury, and Mallori Westbury; his fist daughter, Amanda (Jimmy) Swann and their children, Cristen Eve Swan and Tucker Swan. He will be best remembered as a selfless, dedicated, and loving family man.
A memorial service to honor and celebrate the life of Mr. Gary Michael Westbury will be held on Wednesday, January 8, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Smith Funeral Home with Reverend Jerry Elder officiating. The family will be receiving friends on Tuesday, January 7, 2020 from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. and from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
The family has respectfully requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in memory of Mr. Westbury to the Winder Health Care Activities department to give back to his residents.
