Gladys Miller Forbes, 90, of Wilson NC passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday, November 3, 2024. Born in North Platte, Nebraska on November 6, 1933 to Bernard and Francis Miller, Gladys lived a life dedicated to her family, her church and her friends.
Gladys is survived by her daughters: Vickie Ruffin, Karen Wheeler, Janet Corn (Bo), Tammy Whisenant (Ricky), and son: Joey Forbes (Paula). She is also survived by a multitude of grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews and Danny Wallace whom she considered as her bonus son.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Joe Forbes.
While in school at North Platte High School, Gladys worked in a bakery where she learned the art of baking and decorating cakes. Over the years she baked and decorated hundreds of cakes, including all family birthday and wedding cakes. She was very talented and enjoyed sharing that talent with others.
Gladys joined the Air Force after graduation and was stationed in West Palm Beach, Florida where she met her future husband who was also in the Air Force. After serving 2 years, she moved to Wilson NC to raise her family. She worked at various bookkeeping jobs during her career, primarily at Big Star Grocery, Piggly Wiggly Grocery and lastly at Staples where she retired at the age of 80 after 20 + years.
Gladys loved her Lord and was a dedicated member of the Salvation Army where she taught Sunday school and looked forward each week to attending church, Bible study and Home League. She loved her church family and made many life-long friends.
Gladys was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother and enjoyed attending the grandchildren’s soccer & golf matches, basketball, football and baseball games as well as many dance recitals. During football season you could find her watching her beloved Nebraska Cornhuskers.
As the years progressed her favorite activity was riding around the North Carolina countryside where countless hours and miles were logged enjoying nature and the beautiful scenery.
Gladys’s caring heart, sweet smile and loving attitude will be cherished by all who knew and loved her.
Graveside services, officiated by Pastor Gene Hunt, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 6 at Evergreen Memorial Gardens, 2800 West Nash Street, Wilson NC. Funeral arrangements are in the care of Thomas Yelverton, 2704 West Nash Street, Wilson NC.
Family and friends will be received Tuesday evening at the home of Karen Wheeler, 1106 Rollingwood Drive, Wilson NC.
