Shirley S. Hammonds

1936 – 2024

Shirley Skipper Hammonds, 88, of Leland went home peacefully to be with the Lord on Sunday, December 15, 2024, after a very brief illness.

Shirley was born April 25, 1936, to the late George Donley Skipper and Flossie Mintz. She was married to the late Roy Lee Hammonds for 50 years, and they had one son, William.

Shirley is survived by her son, William and his wife Candace, 3 Grandchildren, Chelsey & Chase, and Amanda (Matt), and 2 Great-Grandchildren, Gemma and Spencer, her younger sister and best friend, Evelyn Lehrschall, and special nephew, Roland “Snookie” Lehrschall and his wife, Vicki, and special niece, Sherry Everette and her husband, Bear. She is also survived by her Stepchildren Elizabeth, Debra, Sandra, Becky, Pam, and Terry and their families.

Shirley was pre-deceased by husband, Roy Lee Hammonds, her parents, as well as her siblings Bill Watson, Doris Smith, Lloyd Watson, and Donley Skipper Jr.

A service will be held Wednesday, December 18, 2024, at 2:00pm at Coble Funeral Home in Wilmington, and a burial will follow. The family will greet friends before the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Community Chapel Baptist Church located at 2419 Malmo Loop Rd NE, Leland, NC 28451. Shirley was a faithful member there from its inception in 1964.
