In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of fifty-seven years, Mary Alice Wilson.
He was educated in the Winston Salem public school system, and served in the United States Navy in World War II. He attended Appalachian State Teacher’s College (now University) where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education in 1952 and a Master’s degree in School Administration in 1959. He taught at Kernersville, NC in the Forsyth School System for 10 years. For two years he served as a coach for the varsity girls’ basketball team. His last three years, he served as Assistant Principal. In 1962, he accepted a position as management analyst with the Air Force at Seymour Johnson Air Force base in Goldsboro, NC. He later trained in the computer field and in 1987, he retired as chief of the computer center at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base. He was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church since 1964 and a member of the J. Paul Edwards Sunday Class, where he occasionally taught.
He was survived by his daughter, Terri Simpson; son, Timothy Simpson (Jane); granddaughters, Hannah and Sara Simpson; sister, Jean Phillips (Richard); and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held at 1:00pm on Monday, May 23, 2022 at Wayne Memorial Park in Goldsboro, NC.
