She was born July 27, 1934 in Wilkes County NC. She resided in the area until she relocated to the beach in 1986 due to health reasons. However, she always loved to return home for the Fall leaves.
Her parents were Charles E. Burchette and Kate Caudel Burchette who proceeded her in death along with her beloved son Edward Bauguss. In the late 1980’s she rented an apartment in the Greensboro area to take care of Edward, rather than leaving him in a hospital in his last days. Taking care of her family was the number one priority in her life.
She is survived by daughter, Myra Bauguss and grandson, Dustin Robinson of the home, brother Perry ( Gail) and sister in law LouRae (Jim) of Wilkes County , NC; along with nieces and nephews
She retired from the NC Dept of Transportation in N. Wilkesboro, NC.
Katherine’s early love of fast sporty cars including her high performance Mustangs, Dodge Demons and several Road Runners only reinforced her love of NASCAR Racing. Watching racing was a weekly television must thorough out her life. In 1986 a brown Road Runner with a big tan stripe brought her to Kure Beach with her ironing board balanced across her seats. And yes, she got a speeding ticket very close to her new home.
Once she moved to the beach, she became involved with several charitable activities including the startup of the Federal Point Help Center supported by of the churches on Pleasure Island. The National organization of the Binky Patrol making quilts for children in difficult situations caught her attention as she was a long-time quilter and made many quilts. After moving to the beach, she learned to surf fish and was known to keep anything larger than a butterbean.
She was a member of the Carolina Beach St Paul’s United Methodist Church, 300 Harper Ave, Carolina Beach, NC 28428 where memorials may be made or to the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church , 3982 Clingman Rd, Rhonda, NC 28670.
A memorial service will be held at a later date at the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with internment in the family plot.
When ask how she could stay so positive, upbeat, and smiling through all the pain, sickness and adversities in her life, she quickly responded ‘I leave everything in the hands of the Lord’.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.CobleGreenlawn.com for the Bauguss family.
