Born in Holly Ridge NC, he was the son of the late Cyril D. and Katie Hobbs Millis.
Joe served proudly in the US Navy for 27 years, reaching the rank of LCdr. After his retirement in 1976, he worked for 14 years for Goodman-Segar-Hogan in Norfolk VA. He was a member of Masonboro Baptist Church.
He was predeceased by his brother, Beryl Millis, and two sisters, Clara George and Annie Farrow.
Joe is survived by his devoted wife of 58 years, Carole Farrow Millis, his children, Holly Reese of Wilmington NC, Joey and Carol Millis of Virginia Beach VA, Mari Beth and Mark Tandy of Wake Forest NC, his grandchildren, Katy Reese, Jonathan Reese, Lauren Neely, Morgan Tandy, Tyler Millis, Taylor Neely and Jordon Millis. Also surviving are his siblings, Bertha George, Arlene James, Alton and Gay Millis, Robert and Sandra Millis, Janie and Marty Snyder and numerous nieces and nephews. Joe leaves behind his beloved 13 yr old dachshund, Penny, and his big kitty cat, Mickey. Joe was loved by his many friends.
A memorial service, with military honors, will be held on Wednesday, June 1st, at 11:00a.m. at Masonboro Baptist Church, officiated by Dr. Gordon Wright. The family will receive visitors at 10:00 a.m. in the church.
Memorial contributions may be made to Masonboro Baptist Church Building Fund or Lower Cape Fear Hospice.
