Jonathan Alper, aged 75, passed away on April 12, 2024, after a short illness. Jon is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Reba Alper, and his cherished daughter, Wendy Alper. Jon is also survived by a sister, Barbara Alper Behar, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins. His sister, Marilyn, passed away in 1998.
Jon was born in New York City and moved to Wilmington, NC, with his parents, Seymour and Mildred Alper, and his two sisters, in 1952. He attended New Hanover County public schools, graduating from New Hanover High School, Class of 1966. He then attended Duke University, receiving a B.S. in Civil/Structural Engineering in 1970. After a year of post-graduate studies at Emory University, Jon returned to Wilmington and joined the family business, Queensboro Steel, where he became a dedicated leader who played a pivotal role in the steel industry. Jon served as the head of the fabrication division for 33 years, where his expertise and vision propelled the company to great success. Following the sale of Queensboro Steel, he assumed the role of President at Southern Metals Recycling, where he continued to inspire and lead for two decades.
Jon was an active member of B’nai Israel Synagogue, where he served as Secretary of the Executive Committee, followed by Vice President of the congregation. In both roles he served meticulously, always taking thorough, handwritten notes. He was an avid golfer and long-time member of Cape Fear Country Club. He was on the Board of the New Hanover Community Foundation, which provides financial grants for local causes.
Family and friends are invited to a Memorial Service on Monday, April 15 at 10:00 a.m. at B’nai Israel Synagogue, 2601 Chestnut Street. Interment will follow immediately afterward at B’nai Israel Congregation Cemetery, 307 North 18th Street. The family respectfully requests donations be made in Jon’s memory to the American Cancer Society.
