George T. Simon of Evanston, IL passed away after a protracted illness on Monday, August 22, 2022. He was 74 years old, a loving husband, the father of two adult sons and a great friend to many. George was born on November 2, 1947, in Albany, NY, the younger of two children born to George and Carol Simon who predeceased him. George graduated from Trinity College and received his law degree from Harvard Law School in 1972. After leaving law school, George entered the law profession working in New York City as an Associate in corporate and securities law before moving to Washington DC to work for the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission where he worked for 5 years rising to the level of Associate Director. Following a move to Evanston, IL, George worked for Coffield, Ungaretti, Harris & Slavin as a Partner in their securities practice for 10 years. In 1991, George went to work for the Foley & Lardner law firm as a Partner in the Chicago office where he worked for the next 25 years. George founded the firm’s Securities Enforcement & Litigation Practice and was a member of the firm’s Management Committee for a number of years. In addition, George was a frequent lecturer and author on securities regulation practice. Throughout his career, George has been a mentor to numerous colleagues who mourn his passing. After his retirement, George was active as a coordinator and student in Northwestern’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. George was married to Lynne Simon (nee Martin) whom he married on May 30, 1975. George was the loving father of Mark (New York, NY) and Andrew Simon (Chicago, IL) and was active in numerous civic and charitable organizations including: The Lakeside Singers where he was a member of the Board along with designing and managing their website and The Remy Bumppo Theater where he was a member of the Board. George enjoyed cooking, photography, theater, music and spending time with friends and family. In addition to Lynne, Mark and Andrew, George is survived by his sister Margaret Simon and her husband, David Weisbrod, of Greenwich, CT, sisters and brothers-in-law, Bill & Sue Martin of Indian Trail, NC, Peter Martin of Marietta, GA and Donald Wright of Mazatlán, Mexico (Beth M. Wright – d. 2/09/22) along with numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and their children. He will be missed by everyone who knew him.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in George’s name to the ACLU of Illinois and the Greater Chicago Food Depository.
The family is planning a Celebration of George’s Life for some time in the future.
