Born at Paterson General Hospital in northern New Jersey on August 2, 1938, and raised primarily in the nearby town of Lincoln Park, Nancy attended Boonton High School and went on to graduate from Wilson College in Pennsylvania and receive a Master’s in Education from William Paterson. Nancy returned to Lincoln Park for much of her adult life, and remained a devoted resident until moving recently to Western New York to be closer to family. In New Jersey, Nancy was a lifelong primary school educator, retiring after decades of teaching from the High Mountain Road Elementary School in Franklin Lakes.
A lover of reading, Nancy could always be found with a good book in hand, historical novels being among her favorites. She also played bridge regularly, enjoyed opera at the Met in NYC, and frequented performances with friends at the famed Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn. And like many Garden State residents, Nancy adored time with family at the Jersey Shore, spending a portion of every summer at Ocean Grove or on Long Beach Island.
Pre-deceased by parents Walter K. Brouwer and mother Beatrice (nee Rushton), Nancy is survived and will be dearly missed by son Christopher Wayne Hankey and partner Cecil Wilson of Saint Petersburg, FL; sister Susan Brouwer Baird of Amherst, NY; niece Jessica and husband Bill; nephew Michael and wife Michelle; nephew David and wife Deborah; and a host of adoring grandnieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be privately held in New Jersey at the shore. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lincoln Park Public Library.
