Part Two

Maria and Mary, would walk 1/2 mile in dress shoes to church at Our Lady of Good Counsel every week; mind you it was up a hill!  They also enjoyed going to flea markets and to Richmond Town for craft fairs; Margo and the Countess would join them sometimes too!  They loved to watch the TV show ? Vienna, and any show involving the history of Queens or castles.   Mind you they would not watch it together, but in their own homes, then call each other on the telephone after the show ended to discuss it!  

She always loved seeing photos of how my kids had grown so I would mail them to her once she moved to Williamsville.  We would email and call on the phone.  I marveled how she would walk to the supermarket and back to get groceries and exercise!  I still have er emails on uses for Coffee Filters & Cucumbers. I will miss those emails and telephone chats.  She always spoke highly of her family in the Buffalo area; Kathy, Alexa and Marielle and how they kept her active, helped her medically when needed and included her with their lives.  She was never alone.  How she loved to cook and bake for them too.  She loved it when Peter and Maria would visit too!  

Rest in peace my dear friend.  You made a difference to many people in your 92+ years.  Keep smiling down at all of us and we will keep smiling up at you!

Dear Peter, Maria, Kathy, Family & Friends,  My sympathy in the passing of your Mom, Aunt and Grandmama & Friend.  I would like to share a little bit about the Maria that I respected and loved; thank you for allowing me this opportunity.

I have known Maria for over 30 years.  We met in 1987 at my in-laws home on Trossach Road in Staten Island; they were next door neighbors.  She was always cooking, baking or sewing; even while taking care of her mother, Mrs. Kish.  

Some of my families favorite desserts are Maria’s recipes:  Rigo Janci, Napoleons' and Walnut Cups to name a few.  She graciously shared her baked goods and recipes.   When I told her that I too, love to bake, she insisted that I find the book, Viennese Pastry Cookbook by Reich, which I did!  She shared her cooking with friends and neighbors too!  Chicken Paprikash (which I re-named Chicken Maria) made only with Hungarian Paprika and w/ poppy seed noodles is a dish that always reminds me of her.  I had never had it until she sent it over. 

Her creativity for sewing and making clothes was a true gift.  It always amazed me how she could turn a remnant or outdated item into something beautiful.  She made me speechless the night before my daughters' Christening in 1997. She called me on the phone and said I must come to her home at 8pm and bring Nicole with me.  She knew it was inconvenient but she said, “Darling you must come!”  She had made Nicole the most magnificent Christening gown.  That night still brings tears to my eyes.    She always shared her extra fabric, thread, notions, trim and patterns with others; including my mother in-law, Mary.
