I Googled "Jack Mack Buff State" today to check if he was still teaching and was saddened to see such an awesome soul has taken the Giant Leap almost exactly 1 year ago. God Bless You, Jack. I'm fortunate to have encountered your gentle soul. Our chats before and after class, and your manner of relaying knowledge was inspiring, unique and relatable. May you still be out there traversing the Cosmos with that same sense of wonder you exuded in class.

I have only fond memories of seeing Jack with Jayne at so many 
AAUW functions over the years, whether they be at work sites such as the annual book sale, or celebratory occasions as scholarship award dinners.  Such a loving, caring relationship as Jack and Jayne showed through difficult times  provided me and others with inspiration on the true meaning of marital vows "till death do us part".


Some years ago my husband Paul and I held a star party at our home in Boston, NY. It rained so the gathering moved inside to eat and talk astronomy. I can still picture Jack at our kitchen table when Paul mention he saw an article about the speed of a subatomic particle at a well known laboratory in Europe. It reported that the particle had exceeded the speed of light. Jack hesitated for a moment and replied, “that’s wrong I did the math” and without missing a beat returned to enjoying his food. Turns out a few weeks later the report was incorrect.
Jack will be missed by me and all the folks at the Buffalo Astronomical Associated.

Over many years, our family had many get togethers with the DuMont family and relations that so often included Jack Mack, after his and Jayna's wedding in 1970.  Jack was always a buoyant and enthusiastic participant in these family gatherings.

Jack was always really interested in our lives, and he took people's concerns very seriously, but he saw the flash of humor in things.
       
I will always think of him delivering one of his one-liners.

One time at 212, (the scene of CA family gatherings), one person after another came down with the highly contagious "pink eye".  Then I arrived -- to join the crowd sharing the upstairs bathroom.    I heard the warning story,  but luckily I wasn't too worried.  Jack observed me, and he quipped, "First symptom.  Confidence!"----------------------------------------------------------------------
Have you ever had to define what makes a joke?  Try it!   Seriously, try it!----Young Alice asked Jack, "What's a joke...?"   He thought awhile, and then he said,  "Well,  it's something that's a little bit right...  and a little bit wrong!"---I have thought of that so many times.  Jack was able to reduce something so complex to words so simple that a young child could take it in.  What a teacher!

   

I always remember Jack as a wonderful and funny uncle. I remember when I was a kid he made bunny ears out of his handkerchief and would pretend that it was real! I loved it! I think I got the benefit of his absolute love for children before he had his own 😀 I remember his love and passion for space and I admired and looked up to him. Uncle Jack will sit in my heart: funny, kind, family oriented, and so smart! May he Rest In Peace in the next world.

Of many wonderful conversations with Jack, what I remember most was a rather casual remark.  As we were driving, I commented on the rather thick traffic slowing and speeding up repeatedly.  And Jack observed, "Oh, yes.  All streams of moving particles behave that way."
Those splendid conversations are surely missed!

Jack was a true gentleman, fully devoted to humanity. It's rare to be blessed with a connection to an brilliant individual who embodies empathy and consistently acts on carefully thought-out values. Jack Mack was all this, leaving this world far better than he found it, a beautiful and incredible legacy by any measure. RIP Jack Mack; your physical presence will be missed, but your spirit lives on in the many lives you touched, lives they touch, and so on.  

Dr. Jack Mack's curiosity, brilliance, and jocularity are well documented, but the ways in which he shared his gifts and encouraged others (through word and deed) to do the same was truly remarkable, all of which I witnessed over many years.
The Macks were friends of my parents and we saw them periodically, during which Jack always asked questions and probed ideas; at that point in my life, similar discussions with adults other than my parents were rare. I have this vague recollection of ongoing chats about Winnie The Pooh and thinking it so interesting that this brilliant scientist found Pooh so humorous and worth deep analysis. Alice in Wonderland also surfaced, but my memory offers more flashes of Pooh-oriented musings.   
Many years later, our paths crossed at Buffalo State. I was disappointed that I couldn’t fit Dr. Mack’s astronomy class into my schedule, but I saw him at Astronomy Club. Since I was working and going to school full time, I was unable to participate in most activities, but after telling him about using binoculars, he invited me to borrow club telescopes. After that, I spent many nights in my driveway, observing and journaling.  (My husband bought me an 8” refractor for a wedding present, a dream come true!)
Fast forward 20 years: My dad had just died and Jack and Jayne were regulars on my mom’s social calendar, sharing events, dinners out, etc. As mom’s eyesight worsened and she couldn’t drive, they’d pick her up or swing by to chat—their company equaled any night out! Over the next few years, as mom was in and out of the hospital, Jack and Jayne were a constant presence, and I attribute her quality of life to the friendship, care, and humor they eagerly offered—they were a Godsend! At this time, my boys also enjoyed the Macks. As a 7th grader, my son stated that he’d earn a PhD in Astronomy, and Jack’s encouragement emphasized “doing good science.” In 2019, my son completed his Astronomy PhD, a journey whose roots I trace back to Jack...

I had the privilege of knowing Dr. Mack for many years, seeing him at events through my work at Buffalo State College. He was a brilliant man whose love of learning and teaching spilled into everyday conversations. Buffalo State was a better institution for having him teach there for 35 years, but also to continue his relationship beyond that, through attendance at events and support of the work at the planetarium. His enthusiasm for science was immense and he will be missed.

I will always remember Jack Mack as a kind and humorous man who truly engaged with you in conversation. Though he was smarter than I by far, he always made me – and everyone to whom he spoke – feel listened to and truly heard, for he so enjoyed the exchange of ideas…all ideas. He made a difference not only in the field of science, but in the world, and will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. My deep condolences to Jayne, his partner for oh-so-many years, his children Alice and Jack and his grandchildren. When you look to the night sky, know that Jack is now a part of the heavens he studied. 

I remember Jack showing me the planetarium during my interview in late 2005. Little did I know  that I would become director of the planetarium in 2010. Although Jack and I only overlapped as faculty for a couple years, his impact on the department and students was obvious. I'm so happy I was able to show off the new planetarium to Jack and Jayne in 2021 and to see them again at the ribbon cutting ceremony.  Jack's influence lives on as some of his students from the 80s pass on astronomy information at many of our public programs, and we continue to honor and now remember Jack with the Jack Mack Lecture Series in Astronomy and Planetary Science. 

Dr. Mack was one of the icons of Science at Buffalo State College. Faculty like Jack who were focused on the success of their students were a treasured resource.  We are all saddened to lose one of the greats from our faculty.

I remember when Jack first installed the observatory at Buff State. He and some students were trying to image the Moon and he wanted some help with getting it printed. He show up at Campos Photography center with  - I think it was a very young Alice in tow - to do some darkroom work. Was impressed with his images, but more impressed with his parenting skills! He kept her distracted doing things while we worked on printing his images without missing a beat. Turned what could have been a kid disaster to a fun night out.
Anyone that good with kids and college students is a rare person indeed. 
Melissa and I have fond memories of all the BAA Star Parties at the Mack's. The light pollution did not stop the astronomical fun of viewing Jacks gardens, or the astronomical discussions that ensued. 
Jacks numerous talks at various Buffalo Astronomical Association meetings were always well attended.

I was always a tiny bit fearful of Alice's dad. Part of it was knowing he was a College Professor and wicked smart, and since I was young, insecure, and easily intimidated, I never knew what might come flying out of his mouth around him. On the occasions I was over at the Macks' green house on Hunter's Lane, stuffed to the brim with things to read, beaming photographs, trinkets on the counters, and so many places to sit down! curl up! be cozy! read! - it felt like a place bursting with curiosity. It was so different from my own house. I wish I had spent more time in Jack's company.
The following is not really a memory of Jack, but it occurred on a night I was sleeping over with Alice - middle school, probably - and since I rarely slept anywhere except my own bed, I was having trouble sleeping in someone else's house. I'm sure several pounds of sugar were also involved, or at least some spooky stories, knowing Alice. So there I was, at 3:00am, wide awake, not sure what to do, and I must have wandered out to the living room to find Jayne also up, or  maybe she heard me and came to investigate. She kindly offered me a cup of Ovaltine - she was going to have some too, she often had difficulty sleeping during the night, and it was when she read or graded papers, and I was welcome to sit with her. The scene remains indelible in my memory because I had never had an adult offer me a hot beverage in the middle of the night before, nor had I ever, in my short life so far, seen someone awake at that hour doing anything resembling work.
I assume that I drank my Ovaltine and went back to my sleeping bag and fell asleep and the rest of the sleepover went uneventfully...but that little snippet of life in the Mack household has always remained with me, years later. And the memory of how kind both Jack and Jayne always were to me. I am sending so much love and peace to Jayne, Alice and Morgan, Charlie, Graham, and Jack and his family too. Grateful that a good man is at rest.

We will always associate Jack  with reading aloud and with gardens.  In common with our father Peaslee, Jack was a superb reader and read aloud to the family on lots of occasions, including visits to us in England when all our children were small.  We learned some good stories from Jack! And we treasure the memory of many good garden visits on trips to stay with us. Besides all our visits to famous  large gardens, we won't forget a neighbourhood walk  Jack took on his own on  his first English trip. Hours passed, and Jack finally returned worryingly late.  He hadn't been lost. He had found so many people to talk to about plants in their front gardens that he lost track of time.  Oh Jack, we will miss you dearly.

Along with countless students, I will remember Dr. Mack pushing his glasses up when giving a presentation. I was 38 when I entered the astronomy program at Buff State so Jack and I had a kind of special relationship due to my age. Trust me when I say he was an icon! He will be missed but every time I look thru our 16 inch Schmidt Cassagrain telescope, here at the Taylor Observatory, I will forever have him in my thoughts... 

I have many memories of Jack over the years, but the strongest was him teaching me the proper way to play Hearts. This was maybe 50 years ago but so clear in my mind. He would either shoot the moon or take no points. At the time it seemed like a great life lesson. He had the greatest smile when shooting the moon too.

Dr. Mack was a fabulous teacher! He showed me the universe and re-ignited my love for the stars! He was always supportive of his students and remembered me years later! He was supportive of my academic pursuits as well as musical ones! He always asked about how things were going whenever we ran into each other. Our conversations often turned to the cosmos and he was quick with advice for this amatur astronomer. He was serious and kind at the same time and I recall his sense of humor and smile under those magnificent expressive eyebrows! I did not get to know the Mack Family  personally but did notice how much Dr. and Mrs. Mack loved each other. Their looks across the room and unspoken attentiveness made their connection and love tangible. I have no doubt they are soul mates! I hope his family always feels his love! He will be missed!  When I heard of your passing, I found myself looking at images of different stars and nebula...I kept coming back to the Orion Nebula. I think I will always think of you when I look at Orion now...I find it a symbol of transformation and birth/rebirth. I hope you are reborn there! I'd like to think of you dancing and laughing among the stars! Maybe holding onto the tail of a comet as it streaks across the sky! Thank you Dr. Mack for everything! May you and your family find peace.  

Jack was a tremendous person whom his daughter Alice idolized. Before I met him, Alice described him as Santa Claus, and he lived up to his reputation! He was forever a source of warmth, wisdom, and joy to his family. I’ll always remember the stories of him benignly cursing at his taxes—and possibly at the furniture—instead of at those he loved. May his memory be a blessing to you always!!

Jack and I liked the same books. Always nice to talk with someone of his intelligence and great sense of humor.


My sincere condolences to my former teaching colleague, Jayne, and to Jack and Alice, on the passing of  their husband and father. Many years have passed since we all met in school, yet I do remember Jack's wit at faculty gatherings or parties.
May he rest in peace and may the family find solace in what must be a raft of amusing memories.

Jack was a wonderful man who liked to joke.  I remember him publically telling Jim Orgren (at Jim's 50th Wedding Anniversary) that Jim could relax his efforts to reform the church - it was already done by someone named Martin Luther.  It brought a big laugh.

I knew Jack and Jayne years ago when I babysat their daughter Alice.  Jack would drop her off in the morning and Jayne would pick her up after teaching at Williamsville East.

In the last few years I would see them at the BPO and you could see that Jayne was his loving caretaker.  She showed all the patience in the world and made sure that Jack remained a part of the community.

I know how hard it is to take care of an ill spouse and I always admired Jayne how she was always so cheerful.  What a wonderful family!

Dr. Mack was a close colleague of my father’s, and our family greatly appreciates the Macks’ longtime friendship. From attending the theater together, to babysitting, to long talks and visits, the Macks have been an important part of our lives.

One of my earliest memories of Dr. Mack is, when I was a bored kid half listening to grownup conversation, he suddenly produced a handkerchief, draped it over his hand, pulled here, tugged there, and voila! A bunny! With a wiggly nose and everything. It was amazing. I only ever saw Dr. Mack do that trick and it never failed to delight.

That sense of fun and wonder ran through Dr. Mack’s life. For example, Dr. Mack had a beautiful garden that he was happy to share with visitors. Included in the garden tour was an invitation to pet the lamb’s ear plants and “snap” the snapdragons. If you were lucky, you might even get to touch a sensitive fern to watch it fold in on itself. Imagine! Plants you could pet and play with!

Dr. Mack had a great intellect and many accomplishments. I personally will always remember him for his warmth, kindness, and sense of humor and play. Sending love and condolences to Mrs. (Jayne) Mack, Alice, and Jack Junior. Dr. Mack will be missed by many, including the Orgrens.

I was so very sorry to read on FB this morning that Jack has passed. My sincere condolences to Jane, Jack, Alice and your extended families. 


There are no words that offer true comfort.  The arms of your children will, hold on tight.

Dr. Mack helped make my time at Buff State special. He was a terrific educator and a wonderful person. I am better for having known him and will always look back with fondness at  the memories of times we shared together. My sincere condolences to Jayne and the rest of his family.

Dan Collins, BS '84 in Physics, with an Astronomy Minor, had Dr Mack for Intro to Astronomy, Observational Astronomy, Stellar and Galactic Astronomy, Cosmology, and Astrophysics.  I also served as Student Director of the Buffalo State Observatory under Dr Mack while he was  Chairman of the Geoscience, Physics, and Interdisciplinary Sciences Department.  Jack was a friend and mentor, and rarely have I had an astronomical discussion without invoking his name.  He will forever be lovingly remembered and greatly missed.

Jack will be sorely missed at St. Mark's & All Saints'.  I went through a few photos and found him working in the kitchen and with the Sunday School.  I saw pictures from the garden he helped put in and stocked with plants from his yard.  I saw the 2012 Parish picnic at the Mack's house with his gardens in prime condition.  I saw one of the many signboard sayings that so impressed the neighbors that they just had to tell him about the joy.  I saw a picture of Caleb, the young boy who Jayne and Jack assisted as he grew into a wonderful man, and continued the friendship to this day.  I saw family and friends that have since grown or left us.  I saw memories that will never be erased.  I couldn't find some of the best ties, but we all enjoyed them.  Thanks to Jack for all the moments since we merged in 2010!  Evelyn Vossler 

Jack had a wonderful sense of humor, which he expressed in recent years through witty church signs at St. Mark's & All Saints Episcopal Church in Buffalo.  He was also a core member of the WNY group working to end solitary confinement in New York prisons and jails.  Among other contributions, he traveled to Albany to lobby state legislators to pass a reform bill, which Jack lived to see enacted in March 2021.  Not to mention his distinguished career as an astronomer.  His intellectual power, social conscience, energy, and humor contributed to the lives of many, many people.  He will be sorely missed.

Jack Mack was for me my “american grandpa”. The man who was there when I needed it the most, and who made sure that I felt welcome in Jayne and his home, no matter what. A man that I Will never forget and his memory Will always live on in Denmark through the stories I tell my son of him. “Ære være Jacks minde”. With all my love to this wonderful Human beeing. There are so few teachers like Dr. Mack.  But, he was not just a teacher, he was a valuable advisor, mentor and friend!  To this day, I still wear the tie he gave me; it is one in my rotation at the observatory today.  His love of the cosmos went so far beyond the classroom.  No matter when you had a question about astronomy he was always willing to talk.  And even in talking about astronomy, he had a way of transitioning into a personal discussion and sharing inspirational thoughts and ideas.  Without him, I would not be managing the Kellogg Observatory today; every time I am there I think of Observational Astronomy and the techniques he taught.  Thank you, Dr. Mack for everything.  I will do my best as one of many students to carry on your legacy every time I speak to anyone about astronomy.

disguised as dogma, or the Latin nomenclature of                 
his galaxy of flowers, planted to brighten the world.


I fondly remember a wonderful visit with Jack, Jayne, Alice, and young Jack in 1986. The Macks stayed with me in Orlando before we all ventured down to a beach somewhere in south Florida. There we were joined by Jack's astronomy students to view Halley's comet. (I still remember being captivated by the comet as viewed through those high-powered telescopes!) Another great memory is a visit with Jack and Jayne at Jayne's and my 50th Mills College class reunion in 2017. It turned out that Jack and my life partner, Gary Evans (a retired music professor from New York), had a great deal in common---such a small world! Gary and I had every intention of following up with visits to New York in our camper-van, but sadly, we were thrown off stride by Covid-19 and never made it. Jayne, we have a guest room; please come!

On behalf of the members (both current and past) of the Buffalo State College Astronomical Society, I am writing this to say Dr.Mack will be missed. To the members he was our advisor, mentor, teacher, fellow astronomer and a dear friend.  Jack was always willing to share his knowledge of astronomy &  cosmology, in a college classroom or at the club's semi annual campouts. It was through his efforts that Buffalo State College was able to acquire an observatory and a professional level telescope. This allowed the club members to learn the fundamentals of observational astronomy.  I am sure that all members of the club will always remember Dr.Mack and think of him every time they are stargazing. "Rest in Peace" Jack, and enjoy your journey among the stars. You have earned your angel wings.

Jack how can we forget all the Saints Alive parties.  I remember the  party when you decided that Zee and I were the "odd couple" because we were always at parties together and our 2 girls were together with one sitter.  I remember the rabbit you would make at church for the kids Dasha and Mylke were talking about it the last time we saw them.   Remembering when we had lunch at your home after church on Sunday.  The walk down the railroad path with my granddaughter and yours when she came to visit one summer.  Will miss you but know you are in much better place now.

I was very saddened to hear of Jack's passing.   My deepest condolences.   Jack was a brilliant man with a wonderful sense of humor.  I thoroughly enjoyed talking astronomy and cosmology with him on many occasions.   He will be missed.

Dr. Jack Mack astrophysicist, mentor and friend went back to the Universe whence he came.  Known him from 1972 and then reunited with him at the Episcopal church when returning back to Buffalo. He was one of the most delightful, colorful and creative men we ever had the chance to know. Our conversations about extraterrestrial geology, the laws of the universe and esoteric philosophies were inspirational.  Another brilliant bright star lights the night sky with his passing. When a person dear to our heart dies, memories remain in our hearts .Those memories are eternal memories. Perhaps memories help us get used to the absence of someone who was a big part of our lives.
Jack has so many memories in my heart He was the father I couldn't be with because of the war That's why I named Jack my American father He gave me the love I needed in this country He made me love life Jack the color of my life He made my life seem valuable .He always tried to put a smile on my face and my children’s faces and he used to make a Bunny using white cloth .
He loved French fries and I always had fun eating fries with him .We spent five years of love and  he was always the wise man in my life .My kids Vian and Hammood and Ayaz had hard time when they knew that Jack wouldn’t be with us anymore but they said we be all together in the Heaven one day 🙏

My thoughts are with you during this transitional time. I know he rests in peace knowing how much he was loved by everyone, family, friends and all his former students. He was an amazing teacher who really cared about his students and excited them with the wonders of the universe. He touched my life in ways few other teachers have. Even though I often could not understand the math involved in his physics lessons (Stellar and Galactic Astronomy and Cosmology was hard!), he was patient and kind and encouraged me greatly with my space art. The heavens have gained another star. He will be missed here on Earth.

Jack and I were teaching colleagues for 27 years at Buffalo State College. I will remember his smile, commitment to the astronomy program, and his friendship. He was a very talented professor, and students worked hard but enjoyed his classes. We will remember Jack in many ways, and these memories will be a comfort and joy in the years ahead. I will honor Dr. John Mack by contributing to his scholarship fund at the College. Rest In Peace.

I was saddened to learn of Jack’s passing.  While I knew his health was failing in recent times, it was still a shock to hear that he is gone. I always looked forward to his keen intelligence and wit and his ability to explain natural phenomena in a logical way. I first met Jack when I enrolled in my first graduate class in astronomy and he soon became my favorite professor and then later he and his talented and gregarious wife, Jane became good friends. 
Buffalo State College was indeed fortunate to have such an inspiring faculty member.  In addition, Jack added so much to the members of the Buffalo Astronomical Association. His leadership was always top notch. 
Jack and Jane also added their enthusiasm to the Western New York opera community.  
The couple’s many interests have enriched countless lives in Buffalo and Jack’s legacy will be a treasure for many years to come.


When I think of Jack, it will always be about his intellect. His heart, his love for his students, his adoration of his wife, his immense love for his children and grandchildren. His love of opera. He was gruff, but if you could get him into a nice conversation you would enjoy the ride. The whole Family is dedicated to education, to truly truly helping others in need. I am Avin from Syria and knew Jack 5 years ago and I name him my US DADDY he was like my dad that I didn’t see him because of the war so Jack gave me all the love that I need in this country. It was hard for me to not see him in my life anymore 😭I will miss him every day and he will be in our heart forever. I Wish if I know him before to spend longer time with him. 

To the Mack and extended family members; I can only offer my profound sympathies and condolences for your loss and for Dr Mack. I have many fond memories of him from when Jack and I were growing up too numerous to share here. Your family is in my thoughts and I hope his life's work and belief in the importance of education will continue at Buffalo State.

I attended school with Jack from grade school at St. Patrick's thru high school at Notre Dame.  He was one of the most intelligent men I knew.  May he rest in peace.  Sincerest sympathy for your loss

Dear Jayne,  I will forever remember our trips together and our conversations and his dry humor brings smiles to my face.  I remember when he came up to me asking if I knew Gus  Misuraca and we found out our kids were best friends.  Our families will be forever linked.   Jack will leave a hole in all our lives.

So sorry to learn of your loss. Sam and I enjoyed meetings, trips and dinners with you and Jack over the years and he will definitely be missed. Blessings to you for your steadfast devotion until the end and in the days of adjustments ahead. I am out of town visiting my children and will miss calling hours.  Hope I will be present when you celebrate his life at a later date.

My sympathy and sincere condolences to the entire Mack Family. My heart is saddened after hearing about the sudden loss of Dr. Jack Mack. I’ve know him for nearly 40 years. I’ve had the privilege of learning from him and the honor of working for him at Buffalo State. I am proud to have known him as my astronomy teacher, mentor and friend. He will be missed by all. 

May Dr. Mack Rest In Peace. 



Dear Jayne, Alice, and Dr.Jack P.
I have so many fond memories spanning the years I have been privileged to know Dr. Jack. Several come from the men's retreat at Bill Leiker's, and Jack's consumption of Stilton cheese (which I also love). One of my fondest  is the Christmas that young Jack came to Eucharist proudly earing his Christmas present cowboy outfit, and the negotiations over wearing his cowboy hat during the service. I fondly remember July 4th back yard dinners complete with viewing fireworks from the club across Sheridan, and Jack's love of his gardens and the Jolly Rodger fort he built for his son and the princess house he built for Alice.
