WILLIAM EARL MOORE, 85, of 22792 NC Highway 125, passed away on Saturday evening September 28, 2013 at his home. Earl was born in Martin County on January 26, 1928 to the late William Perlie and Beline Moore. He grew up working and living on a tenant farm just outside of Williamston along with his parents, three brothers and three sisters. He attended Williamston High School and graduated Valedictorian of his senior class in 1945. Soon afterwards he began working as an equipment operator with the State Highway Commission. Early in his career he successfully completed a correspondence course and received a 2-year Civil Engineering Certificate. Along with determination, hard work & outstanding service, he became a Highway Engineer with the Department of Transportation and completed his 43-year career as District Engineer in the Plymouth Office.
He married Leah Moore on September 3, 1949 and the two resided in Martin County together for 63 years. Earl was a member of Community Christian Church where he served as a Deacon, Elder, Sunday School Superintendent, Trustee, and Sunday schoolteacher, and member of the choir for many years. "Mr. Earl”, as he was affectionately called, was a mentor and prayer warrior for so many and helped many in the community with their taxes as well. He was a devoted husband, father and granddaddy to his family and a good friend to many. He was an accomplished gardener and enjoyed fishing and yard work.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Leah and three brothers: James, Ben, and J.B.; and a sister, Hazel Brown. Surviving are two sisters, Ruth Leggett of Williamston, and Patty Strawbridge of Louisburg, NC. Other survivors are a son William Joseph Moore and wife Faye of Williamston; daughter Debbie Daniels and husband Ken Daniels of Winston Salem. Grandchildren are Jason Daniels and wife Julee of Washington, DC and their two children; David Daniels and wife Jayme of Wilson and their three children; Becky Radford and husband Roger of Fuquay-Varina and their three children; Corey Moore and wife Christy of Raleigh and their three children; Daniel Moore and wife Maria of Wilson and their son.
Visitation will be held at Community Christian Church located at NC Highway 125 on Tuesday, October 1st from 6:30-8:30 pm. The funeral service will be held Wednesday afternoon, 1:30 pm at the Church. Flowers may be delivered to the home, or memorial do-nations may be made to Community Christian Church, 22184 NC 125, Williamston, NC 27892; or a Community Hospice Care agency of your choice.
