We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of William “Bill” Hamilton, founder of TechSmith Corporation, on December 15, 2024, at the age of 77. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and visionary entrepreneur, Bill’s extraordinary life was marked by profound generosity, unwavering integrity, and an enduring impact on his family, community, and digital media technology.
Born in 1947, Bill was honorably discharged from the army before returning to Michigan State University to complete his education. He graduated with a degree in sociology, complemented by extensive coursework in computer science. This foundation and his insatiable curiosity and drive set the stage for a career defined by innovation, meaningful connections, and service.
In 1987, Bill founded TechSmith Corporation, transforming it from a fledgling consulting startup into a globally recognized leader in visual communication tools. Under Bill’s leadership, products like Snagit and Camtasia empowered millions worldwide to share knowledge.
Yet for Bill, TechSmith was not just a company but a community. He fostered a culture of respect, collaboration, and shared purpose, where every employee was valued and inspired. As a mentor and coach, he guided hundreds of employees, encouraging them to reach for their dreams and contribute meaningfully to their work and the world.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Bill’s philanthropic efforts were a cornerstone of his legacy. A passionate supporter of education, he championed STEM programs for young learners, and his legacy will continue to fund scholarships to help students achieve their potential.
Through his dedication to the Lansing community, Bill played a pivotal role in organizations like Impression 5 Science Center, nurturing curiosity and discovery in countless children. His support extended to veterans, small businesses, and Lansing-area charities such as St. Vincent Catholic Charities, the Humane Society, Capitol Area Literacy Coalition, and many others. Bill’s efforts also helped expand access to technology for underserved communities.
His generosity extended to national and international charities, including the Gary Sinise Foundation, Semper Fi,The Army Historical Foundation, World Kitchen, and Doctors Without Borders.
Bill’s generosity and love of learning inspired everyone he met. Whether mentoring colleagues, discussing military history, pursuing photography, shooting in IDPA matches, operating amateur radios, or perfecting his bread-baking skills, he brought the same humility, enthusiasm, and curiosity to every interaction. His commitment to lifelong learning and servant leadership left an indelible mark on all who knew him.
Bill is survived by his wife and partner of 42 years, Susan Heathfield, and his daughter, Wendy Hamilton. Together, they shared a bond of love and mutual respect that shaped their family and lives.
Wendy continues to carry forward Bill’s vision and values as the CEO of TechSmith, where their values-driven approach to customer and employee engagement has fostered a culture of innovation and care.
A private funeral will be held for close family members. A public celebration of Bill’s life will occur on Monday, February 24, 2025, at 1:30 PM at TechSmith Corporation. All who knew and admired Bill are welcome to join in honoring his remarkable life and legacy.
