Joan Marie Metro, age 78, died on Friday, December 9, 2011 in Haslett, MI where she lived most of her life. She was born in Portland, MI on September 21, 1933 to Ralph and Helen (Boughner) Spalding. She graduated from Resurrection High School and worked as a bank teller. Joan married Steve G. Metro on August 28, 1954 and he preceded her in death in 2008. Also preceding her in death were her parents and her fur kids Zoom Zoom, Cricket and Patty. Left to cherish her memory are her children, Linda (David) Reilly, Steven, and Scott (Carla); granddaughters Angela Gumper and Heather (David) Bailey; great grandchildren Brenna, Garrett, Gavin, Conner and Graham; her brother Gerald (Wilda) Spalding, sisters Carol (Gene) Erickson and Rosemary Lonier; brother-in-law John Metro and sisters in law Mary VanDyke and Mary Lou Metro; and many nieces and nephews. Joan loved her granddaughters dearly and time with them was her greatest joy. She cherished her friends and the bowling leagues, card parties and lunches with them. She loved traveling with Steve, adventures with her beloved sister, Carol, gardening, sewing, the Detroit Tigers and MSU Spartans, and preparing delicious meals for family and friends. A devout Catholic, she realized a lifelong dream when she toured the Vatican with Linda and David in 2009. Despite experiencing the ravages of dementia, she never lost her sweet, kind demeanor.
