Bill was born on September 26, 1932, in Greenville, Mississippi to William Tiffee Burnett and Clara Allene Hollingsworth Burnett. On March 17, 1956, he married his high school sweetheart, Harriet Ann Bowe. They were married 65 years and had two daughters. He was a member of Hickory Neck Episcopal Church and was a man of deep faith.
He served in the U.S. Navy. He was commissioned and designated a Naval Aviator following completion of the Naval Aviation Cadet Program in 1954. Early assignments included several aviation squadrons. Later, his interest and assignments were with Naval Communications. His assignments were in all ocean areas of the world. He retired in 1979 with the rank of Captain. After his retirement from the Navy, he worked for several Defense Contractors in Northern Virginia. Bill graduated from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA with a BS (Math) and later from George Washington University, Washington DC with a Master of Accounting.
Bill enjoyed spending time with his family and traveling near and far with his wife. They took many trips around the world with the Road Scholars after his retirement. He also enjoyed photography, hiking, and playing bridge. He was a man of incredible knowledge and a lifelong seeker of it.
He is survived by his wife, Ann; two daughters: Kathy Haney and Patty Hartman (Jim); four grandchildren: Zach Haney (Katie), Kati Picanco (Dolfo), Ben Haney and Sarah Graves (Tony); two great grandchildren: Elliot Haney and Mila Picanco; one sister: Barbara Burnett; and numerous nieces,
nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Don Haney.
A private family service will take place in the Historic Chapel at Hickory Neck Episcopal Church with inurnment at Arlington National Cemetery.
