Nelsen Williamsburg

Sally Hatley Lineberger died of cancer July 20, 2024, at her home in Williamsburg, Va. She was 69. She was born Dec. 13, 1954, to Elsa and Spencer Hatley and grew up in Salisbury, N.C. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Patsy. Her survivors include her husband, Mark Lineberger, of the home; daughter, Dr. Margaret Rollison (Jason) of Leland, N.C.; son, Joseph Lineberger (Kristi) of Yorktown, Va.; brother, Joe Hatley of Oak Island, N.C; sister, Betty Henderson (Lee), of Little Rock, Ark.; and her grandchildren, Fiona Lineberger and Caroline and Hunter Rollison (Ashlyn). Sally's zest for living and love of laughter enriched the lives of those who knew her. Their world will lack that spark now, but they'll have plenty of happy memories to savor. Among those who will remember her are the hundreds of students she taught and shared her passion for history with. She started her career as a schoolteacher late in life, earning her education degree at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington in 1998 then teaching at South Brunswick Middle School until her retirement in 2012. Her career was just part of a full life, however. Sally was a devoted wife and a proud mom and grandmother. She loved to dance and always had music playing. She was an avid reader. She was a great cook. She was a passionate sports fan (Go Tar Heels and Steelers!). She was also a planner, the friend or family member who organized parties, holiday gatherings and vacations. There was seldom a time when Sally didn't have something fun in the works. That often-involved travel. She and Mark liked to explore new places, such as Alaska, or return often to favorite spots, including Little Switzerland, N.C. There are no immediate plans for a memorial service. The family will notify loved ones when a service is scheduled. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to a charity that is close to your heart.
