John Franklin Thompson, 83, a lifelong resident of James City County, passed away on Tuesday, October 17, 2023. He is preceded in death by his parents, George Dewey Thompson, Sr. and Mary Bett Cobb Thompson; brother, George Dewey Thompson, Jr. and sister-in-law, Betty; sister, Ella May Priester; cousin, Godwin "Goody" Cobb; brothers-in-law, Albert Letchworth, Kenneth Hill, Edwin Aadahl, Bob Trull, Sherry Salyer and Billy Salyer; nephew, Randy Salyer; and great grandniece, Nanette Letchworth.
He retired after 36 years as a foreman from the Newport News Shipbuilding in 1997. To many people, John was known as Daddy, PopPop and Uncle John. Pop loved spending time in the outdoors, fishing, hunting and various other activities like gardening and playing on his tractors. He was also an Honorary Member of Pinewood Hunting Club.
John is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Diane; sons, Johnny (Donna), Tommy (Candice), and Scotty (Ginger); grandchildren, Mike (Courtney), Caitlin, Chloe, Caleb, Camden and Tabitha; three great-grandchildren, Jax, Sawyer and Wyatt; sisters, Lucille Letchworth, Elizabeth Aadahl, Fannie Trull, Margaret Hill, Catherine (Wayne) Driscoll and Esther Boatwright; brother, Edward Thompson (Pam); sister-in-law, Bibby Salyer; and brother-in-law, Pat Priester.
A graveside service for John will be held Monday, October 23, 2023 at 11:00 AM at Williamsburg Memorial Park, 130 King William Drive, Williamsburg, Virginia.
