Hazel Mae Dudgeon Mann

Hazel Dudgeon Mann passed away at home on February 22, 2021 surrounded by her three children and her husband of 59 years. Hazel was born Hazel Mae Dudgeon in Tampa, Florida on October 2, 1938. She was preceded in death by her parents Hubert and Della Irene Dudgeon, her brother John Dudgeon, and her sister Eva Lee Dudgeon (Hudson). Hazel grew up in New Port Richey, Florida and San Antonio, Texas. She attended Northeast High School in San Antonio and was actively involved in the High School Pep Squad. Following graduation in 1956, her family moved back east to live in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. While there, she worked for a department in the public school system that prepared books for the school libraries. In 1962, she married Michael Mann of Miami, Florida and the two of them moved to Dayton, Ohio where Michael entered active duty with the United Stated Air Force. In 1970 while they were living in Ohio, Hazel obtained her degree in Social Work from Ohio State University. After obtaining her degree, she and her husband Michael moved to Virginia where they raised their three children, a son Timothy and two daughters, Elizabeth and Karen. Hazel initially worked in the Social Welfare Department in Hampton, Virginia, but in 1978, she and her growing family moved to Williamsburg, Virginia where she dedicated her time to raising her kids, volunteering with the local school system and multiple community organizations. She also worked as a realtor for over ten years in Williamsburg, primarily with Long and Foster, and was a member of Williamsburg Area Association of Realtors. Hazel was active in the Williamsburg James City Schools throughout the entirety of her children’s school career. She was active in the PTA, and as President, one of her proudest achievements was helping raise grant funding for college bound seniors through the creation of the Lafayette Educational Fund. She enjoyed being a Girl Scout Leader and was one of the organizers of the Kingspoint Women’s Club. An avid painter, Hazel enjoyed painting landscapes for friends and family as well as spending time in her garden and traveling. She was a strong supporter of the American Field Service International Exchange program and was a host mother to students from Venezuela, Colombia, Germany, and South Africa. In addition to her husband, Dr. Michael J. Mann of Williamsburg, she is survived by a large and loving family; son Timothy Jack Mann and fiancé Katrina Cauble, daughter Elizabeth Mann Judd and husband Daniel Judd and daughter Karen Mann Schell and husband Jeffrey Schell all of Williamsburg, VA. Hazel enjoyed spending time with her family, particularly her grandchildren: Jenna Smith and her husband Rich of Phoenix, AZ, Miles, Elizabeth, Susan and Andrew Schell and Cameron and Kelsey Judd of Williamsburg, VA. She is also survived by her sister Ruth Ann Tobey of Texas City, TX and a multitude of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. Hazel was a member of First Church of Christ, Scientist in Williamsburg. She loved the church and served it in many capacities, including Superintendent of the Sunday School for many years. She also served as a member of the Board of Directors, Treasurer, Clerk and would watch over the children in the nursery. A private memorial service will be held with family.
