Eleanor Porter Engers

She was born on April 14, 1927 in Chase, Maryland to Florence Bevans and Francis Porter. A brother, Frank, was born 6 years later, the same year her young father died in a hunting accident. She spent much of her young years with her Porter grandparents in the country. Eventually her mother married Phillip Stinchcomb, and her sister, Phyllis, was born of that union.

Eleanor graduated from Eastern High School in Balto in 1945, a popular and very good student. After graduating, she went to work at the C&P Telephone Company. Soon after, she met John A. Engers, an aspiring medical student, and they were married in Washington, D.C. in 1948. They lived in Baltimore County and raised their family of four. As an OB-Gyn doctor, her husband was often called away and she held the helm of their family, the quintessential wife and mother, providing a full and happy home life for all.

She and her husband enjoyed retirement in their home in Phoenix, Maryland until he died in 2011. She then moved to Williamsburg, to be close by her middle daughter. She lived at Brookdale Senior Living and spent her time reading, playing bridge with newly acquired friends, and many outings with her daughter, Kathy. She enjoyed good health until August 2021, and she moved into assisted living where she was cared for and looked after very lovingly.

She leaves behind her children, Dr. John Engers (Seema) of San Ramon, CA; Judy Rabbitt (Dan) of Crofton, MD; Kathy Barber (Tyler) of Williamsburg, VA; and Ellie La Martina (Steve) of Balto; sister, Phyllis Bagdadi of CA; sister-in-law, S. Kathleen Marie Engers, SSND of Baltimore, MD; and sister-in-law, Joan Porter of MD.

She was also a beloved grandmother to 7, and a great grandmother to 7.

Eleanor was a member of St. Bede Catholic Church in Williamsburg where a funeral mass will take place on Tuesday, December 21, 2021 at 11AM. The service will also be livestreamed at https://bedeva.org/live-stream.
